Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (NYSE: TSM) might not be a household name, but it could be the world’s most important company.
TSMC, as the company is also known, makes more semiconductors than anyone else in the world. It’s the manufacturer that chip designers and tech giants like Apple, Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, Qualcomm, and others all rely on.
In other words, TSMC is a crucial linchpin in the global economy as the electronics the world depends on wouldn’t get made without the company. The chart below helps illustrate just how big a role it plays in the chip industry.

As you can see in the chart above, the company controls a solid majority of worldwide contract semiconductor manufacturing. Its market share has risen slowly but steadily in recent years, and it’s now above 60%.
Not only that, but TSMC has an even larger 90% market share of advanced chip manufacturing. That includes 3-nanometer chips that are quickly growing in popularity and becoming standard, as well as advanced chip packaging for larger components.
Companies like Apple and Nvidia rely on TSMC to make their chips because no other company can provide its capacity or level of technology.
That advantage is not going to go away easily as the company’s close relationships with industry giants also give it an advantage. Even Intel, which has its own foundry, relies on TSMC to manufacture some advanced chips, showing how entrenched its leadership is.
As the semiconductor sector rebounds from an earlier post-pandemic decline and benefits from growth in demand for artificial intelligence (AI) components, TSMC has seen revenue growth accelerate. Given its position in the foundry industry, it’s best positioned to capitalize on future growth in AI-related demand.
While other chipmakers and cloud infrastructure companies duke it out in the emerging AI space, TSMC seems like one of the easiest AI stocks to own today as it’s already the clear leader in the foundry business.

‘Saturday Night Live’ Alum Victoria Jackson Says Cancer Is Inoperable – Hollywood Life

Image Credit: WireImage Former Saturday Night Live cast member Victoria Jackson announced this week that she has been diagnosed with inoperable cancer—estimating she has roughly three years to live.
Jackson first revealed her breast cancer diagnosis in 2016, but on Wednesday, Aug. 14, the 65-year-old confirmed in her ‘Is the Cancer Back?’ Instagram video series that her cancer has indeed returned.
“Update on the cancer: they cannot operate and cut out the marble in my chest that is laying on my windpipe and would eventually suffocate me to death,” she said with a giggle at the beginning of the nearly 8-minute video.
“They’re giving me a magic pill,” Jackson added about her treatment. “It’s going to be delivered to my front door within the next 12 hours. It’s based on Ribociclib, and it will shrink the marble, hopefully… I looked up the pill on Google, and it says people who take this have 32.6 months to live—something like that.”
In her Instagram caption, however, Jackson gave a slightly longer timeline. “Cancer Update: I have 34.8 months to live if I don’t get hit by a meteor, shot by a MAGA hater, get Covid again, or WWIII breaks out.” (Jackson has become a conservative and religious activist in recent years, often sharing Bible scripture and praising former President Donald Trump on social media.)
After revealing the unfortunate news, the comedian—who was on SNL from 1986 to 1992—still maintained a positive tone, telling her followers that she’s had a “fantastic life.”
Despite appreciating the life she’s already lived, she mentioned milestones she would still like to be a part of.
“I’d like to see my grandson born—his name is Jimmy—in October and get to know him a little, and I would like to see my daughter Aubrey have a baby,” she said.
Jackson made regular appearances on “Weekend Update” during her time on Saturday Night Live and was known for doing various impressions, from Roseanne Barr to Zsa Zsa Gabor. Her acting credits also include episodes of The X-Files, In the Heat of the Night, Sesame Street, and more. Jackson’s film appearances include Family Business, The Matchbreaker, and other titles.

Tiffany Henyard, the self-described “supermayor” of Dolton and the supervisor of Thornton Township, the second most populated township in Illinois, has been cut off by the state comptroller’s office.

The Illinois comptroller is withholding funds from the town until Henyard submits the required annual financial reports to the state. (Image: Fox32) Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza said Friday that the state is freezing $135,000 owed to the Village of Dolton until Henyard becomes transparent about her spending of taxpayer money. Henyard is under federal investigation for reckless and lavish spending on personal matters on the village’s dime.
Among her many questionable expenses was a first-class roundtrip to Las Vegas last year where she ran up over $10,000 in casino resort, hotel room, and dining expenses. Mendoza said she’s withholding Dolton’s $135K check until the village submits financial records as required by state law.
“When municipalities around Illinois are having legitimate problems filing their annual reports with us, based on staffing or other issues, we earnestly work with them to get them into compliance,” Mendoza said in a statement.
Dolton is different. The mayor’s office has refused to communicate with us or address the problem. If Mayor Henyard refuses to follow state law, my office will use the tools at our disposal to safeguard the interests of Dolton’s citizens,” Mendoza stated.
Mendoza reports that her office hasn’t received a financial filing from Dolton since 2021. Annual reports for 2022 and 2023 are delinquent, Mendoza explained.
Irresponsible Spending
Mendoza is keeping so-called “offset” funds from Dolton, which the state issues to townships and municipalities annually that are collected from things like traffic fines, income tax refunds, and lottery winnings. Dolton received $120K last year.
Henyard’s alleged reckless spending, which includes a private security detail fit for a U.S. president or royal, has put her in hot water.
Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is leading a probe into Dolton’s finances on Henyard’s watch.
A preliminary report raised questions about the mayor regularly using a village credit card at Amazon, Target, Walgreens, Wayfair, and other retailers. She spent $33K on Amazon with the village credit card alone. Investigators believe the mayor has spent over $1 million of taxpayer money on herself and her closest allies.
Dolton’s population is only about 20K people. More than 20% live in poverty with the average median income at just $24K.
Henyard, meanwhile, is paying herself $270K annually and has proposed that the next mayor be paid only $25K, something her critics say is designed to fend off opponents from seeking the mayor’s seat.
Las Vegas Allegations
Henyard’s 2023 Las Vegas trip with an entourage of 13 raised many eyebrows.
One of her top supporters is Dolton Trustee Andrew Holmes, a community activist who allegedly sexually assaulted a now-former township employee on the Las Vegas trip.
The woman, Fenia Dukes, was on the trip as one of Henyard’s assistants. She alleged in a lawsuit she was raped by Holmes in a casino hotel room, a claim that Dolton police officer Byron Miles who was also on the trip supported in the legal filing.
The officer said Holmes called him bragging about hooking up with the assistant. On FaceTime, he panned the camera to show the partially dressed woman lying in the bed. The officer said in the complaint he could not tell if the woman consented.
In the aftermath of the lawsuit, the woman says she was forced to take unpaid time off and was later terminated. The police officer was demoted and removed from Henyard’s detail.

Deals: here are the Google Pixel 9 series pre-order deals

By far the biggest launch this week was the arrival of the Google Pixel 9 series. The search giant unveiled two new flagships, a new near-flagship phone and a new foldable, all of which are currently on pre-order.
Starting with the Google Pixel 9, this takes over from the Pixel 8 – an FHD+ non-LTPO display and no telephoto camera keep it from earning a “pro” moniker. However, this phone does feature the powerful new Tensor G4 chipset and a 48MP ultra wide camera. Both the wide and ultra wide cameras are the same as on the 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL.
Google has trade-in deals. Note that from what we’ve seen, the storage doesn’t matter (i.e. a Pixel 8 128GB and 256GB trade in for the same price). A Pixel 8 in good condition is valued at $490, a Pixel 7 at $360. An iPhone 15 is worth $480, an iPhone 14 at $440. The values of Samsung phones aren’t great, a Galaxy S23 goes for $320, even the S24 (which isn’t even a year old) is $400.

(Best Buy) $100 gift cardSomething you may have noticed – there are no free storage upgrades. Instead, Google, Amazon and Best Buy are each offering store credit or a gift card and they are all the same value, e.g. the Pixel 9 comes with $100 credit/gift card.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro is exactly the same size as the Pixel 9, but it is a true Pro phone with a higher resolution LTPO display (1,280 x 2,856px) and a 5x 48MP telephoto camera. The Pros get an additional upgrade – a 42MP selfie camera with an ultra wide lens.
The Pixel 9 Pro is not quite the petite flagship that some might have hoped for – it’s larger and heavier than the Galaxy S24 and the iPhone 15 Pro. It’s a bit larger than the Pixel 8 too. Still, you’re not getting a 5x tele camera on the Samsung or Apple phones (just 3x and with a lower resolution sensor), no high resolution ultra wide or selfie cameras either. And it’s not like Samsung and Apple do fast charging, so Google doesn’t look bad in comparison. There are trade-in offers with the values mentioned above.

(Best Buy) $200 gift cardThe Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is the follow-up to the 8 Pro (Google changed up its naming scheme, which makes things confusing). This is a larger version of the 9 Pro with a 6.8” display (vs. 6.3”) and a larger 5,060mAh battery (vs. 4,700mAh). One additional difference here is that the wired charging goes up to 37W (vs. 27W), which gets the battery to 70% in 30 minutes. It’s no VOOC charging, but we’ll take it.
Note that all Google Pixel 9 phones will be supported for 7 years.

(Best Buy) $200 gift cardThe Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is a major improvement over Google’s first attempt at a foldable. It closes down to just 10.5mm, compared to 12.1mm on the Galaxy Z Fold6 and 11.7mm for the OnePlus Open. It’s heavier than both, however, at 257g.
The OnePlus phone has an excuse – it’s a 2023 model. The Galaxy Z Fold6 is brand-spanking new, though, and we think that Google overtook Samsung in the foldable development race.
Anyway, note that while the Pixel 9 Pro Fold uses all new internal and cover displays, it has more or less the same camera hardware as the original Pixel Fold. However, the original Fold launched with the old Tensor G2, so the new model with a G4 is significantly more powerful and more efficient too.
Google launched a new 45W charger, which you will need to get the maximum charge speed with the Pixel 9 Pro – the old 35W charger won’t cut it. That said, if you have a USB-PD charger you are happy with, you can skip this one.
The new Google Pixel Watch 3 comes in two sizes, 41mm and 45mm, while the Watch 2 was available only in 41mm size. The 45mm option gets you a larger 1.4” display (vs. 1.2”) and a larger 420mAh battery. We’ve linked the Wi-Fi watches below, but you can get an LTE version for $100 more. If you do go for the 4G version, Google will give you 2 years of free data on Google Fi. Note that while texting is supported, calling from the watch is not (at least not with this free plan).
Finally, Google unveiled the new Pixel Buds Pro 2. This is the first time its custom Tensor chips venture into the TWS buds form factor, but promise massive improvements to noise cancellation (2x in the 400Hz-2kHz range). And the ANC adapts to your environment automatically. The buds have no stems (cough, Samsung, cough) and promise long battery life (8 hours for the buds with ANC on, up to 30 hours with the case).
