Jared Isaacman took off in a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Tuesday—his second trip to space.

Aiming to perform the first private spacewalk and set a post-Apollo altitude record, the billionaire boarded as commander alongside his close friend Scott ‘Kidd’ Poteet, a retired Air Force pilot, and two SpaceX engineers, Anna Menon and Sarah Gillis.

“I wasn’t alive when humans walked on the moon. I’d certainly like my kids to see humans walking on the moon and Mars and venturing out to explore our solar system,” said the 41-year-old, who bankrolled the flight, before liftoff.

The spacecraft, named Resilience, will enter an orbit that takes the crew up to 870 miles (1,400 km) above Earth, surpassing the Earth-orbiting record set during NASA’s Project Gemini in 1966.

Here are 5 things to know about the daredevil billionaire.

Isaacman Left High School at 16

Isaacman is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and pilot known for his ambitious ventures in technology, aviation, and space exploration. His net worth is estimated at $1.9 billion, according to Forbes.

But at 16, he left high school in New Jersey to earn his GED and secured a job with a credit card processing firm called Merchant Services, Inc.

“I was lucky to get hired into an industry that was very immature and had a lot of opportunities for improvement,” said Isaacman, who soon left to start his own payments company. He named it United Bank Card, believing it sounded like the name of an established financial institution.

Isaacman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

He Is the Founder and CEO of Shift4 Payments

Isaacman’s entrepreneurial journey began at a young age. By 19, he had transitioned from a computer repair business to the world of payments, launching what would eventually become Shift4 Payments.

Under his leadership, the company has grown into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, processing over $200 billion in payments annually and serving businesses across various industries.

He Has a Passion for Aviation

Beyond business, Isaacman is an accomplished pilot with a deep passion for aviation—particularly its history, “especially World War II,” he recalled.

He mentioned that he “started playing flight simulators as a kid on a computer” and now holds multiple world records for flying, including a speed-around-the-world flight in 2009, which raised money and awareness for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

His aviation skills and experience were crucial in his next major venture: space.

He Was Part of the Inspiration4 Mission in 2021

In September 2021, Isaacman made headlines by commanding the Inspiration4 mission, a SpaceX Crew Dragon flight that launched four civilians into orbit for three days. The mission, which ultimately raised over $240 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, was a groundbreaking achievement in the emerging field of commercial space travel.

Isaacman, who funded the mission, selected three other civilians to join him, representing “leadership,” “hope,” “generosity,” and “prosperity.”

Isaacman Is Married with Two Children

Jared and his wife, Monica (née Chacana), have been together for nearly 20 years but didn’t marry until around 2012. The two grew up in the same town, attended the same middle school, and Monica eventually became the 12th employee at Isaacman’s company.

Speaking about his wife, Jared said, “Monica gets it. She knows exactly what I do in life: I work.”

The couple welcomed their first child, Mila, in 2014, followed by their second daughter, Liv. Jared often shares glimpses of his life with his daughters on social media.

US Attorney Generals Endorse Plan to Social Media Warning Labels

    [ad_1]

With various regions considering new age limits on social media access, American regulators are also looking to take action, albeit in a less restrictive and enforceable form.

Today, a coalition of over 40 state attorneys general have called on Congress to implement safety labels on social media platforms, which would include warnings of their potential risks to children.

The initiative stems from a proposal put forward by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy, in which Murthy

    As per Murthy:

“The mental health crisis among young people is an emergency, and social media has emerged as an important contributor. Adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of anxiety and depression symptoms, and the average daily use in this age group, as of the summer of 2023, was 4.8 hours. Additionally, nearly half of adolescents say social media makes them feel worse about their bodies.”

With this in mind, Murthy believes that social platforms should have clear warning tags, much like the labels added to cigarette packaging.

“Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior. When asked if a warning from the surgeon general would prompt them to limit or monitor their children’s social media use, 76 percent of people in one recent survey of Latino parents said yes.”

How that would work, in practice, is another thing. Presumably, an official Surgeon General’s warning would need to be displayed on any download access points, as well as on the home page of the apps themselves.

Would that work in a social media context? I mean, we already know that no one bothers to read the usage agreements, so it seems like kids and parents may also just overlook these tags too.

In which case, is it worth pushing?

To be clear, Murthy has also proposed more expanded restrictions and processes to protect teen users, beyond just warning tags, including broader protections from harassment, abuse and exploitation, as well as limits on data gathering. So it’s not just these sternly worded panels that Murthy’s suggesting, though his recommendations don’t go as far as restricting social media usage among teens.

Several other regions have proposed exactly that, with Australia being the most recent government to float the concept of social media age limits. Several U.S. states have also explored this path, which makes this new proposal seem like a softened approach.

But still, 42 state attorneys general have endorsed the plan, and as Murthy notes, maybe, based on other examples, that could at the least prompt more users to consider such impacts before signing up.

The proposal will now go to Congress for further action.

  • 5 Notable Policies From Kamala Harris’s New Platform

5 Notable Policies From Kamala Harris’s New Platform

    [ad_1]

    Photo: Emily Elconin/Bloomberg/Getty Images

Kamala Harris’s campaign unveiled its policy platform over the weekend as the vice-president prepares to take on Donald Trump in Tuesday’s high-stakes presidential debate. For weeks, Republicans and pundits alike have knocked Harris as being light on policy since rising to the top of the ticket, a criticism compounded by her initial bare-bones campaign website, which made no mention of her stances.

In a list headed “A New Way Forward,” the campaign has divided its issues into various areas of focus, including the economy, foreign policy, and protecting “fundamental freedoms,” which include abortion rights and civil rights. Each policy area features a section on Project 2025, contrasting the Harris-Walz stance against the Heritage Foundation–backed plan Trump has attempted to disavow. As the campaign pledges to move toward a new era of politics, some ties to the Biden campaign appear harder to shake. In addition to including some of the same positions Harris held as vice-president, The New Republic reports, the policy page initially contained metadata that referenced reelecting Joe Biden, suggesting some of the text was taken directly from the old campaign website. (The references have since been removed.) Here are some highlights of Harris’s proposals.

Under her economic policy, Harris calls for the end of “subminimum wages for tipped workers and people with disabilities” in what appears to be a new proposal. Under federal law, employers have to pay their tipped workers only $2.13 per hour as long as that amount plus tips equals the current federal minimum wage of $7.25. The vice-president is also calling for raising that minimum, though she did not specify a figure. And she wants to eliminate taxes on tips, which Trump has also proposed and which economists are less enthusiastic about.

In Harris’s plan to address housing scarcity, she is pushing for the construction of 3 million rental units and homes in her first term as president. She’s also promising to “provide first-time homebuyers with up to $25,000 to help with their down payments, with more generous support for first-generation homeowners,” per the campaign’s website. Experts have raised questions about the feasibility of some of these proposals, with one economist telling the Times that the new homebuyers’ assistance could result in steeper competition for an already limited supply of housing.

Harris has made tackling high costs a key part of her economic policies in an attempt to take on inflation, which is consistently near the top of voters’ concerns. As part of her new platform, she’s backing a ban on corporate price gouging on food and groceries as well as on price-fixing by corporate landlords, which she says contributes to excessive expenses for the average consumer and renter. Harris first raised these messages during an economic address in Raleigh, North Carolina, in her first policy speech since becoming the nominee. Trump has sought to tie Harris to rising costs, pointing to the current administration and “Bidenomics” as the reason for Americans’ heftier bills. Though Harris hasn’t specified what her proposed price-gouging ban will entail, the former president has claimed it will amount to “SOVIET Style Price Controls.”

On health-care costs, the vice-president is also promising to expand the $2,000 cap on out-of-pocket spending, as well as the $35 cap on insulin, from seniors to all Americans.

Harris indicated support for “commonsense” Supreme Court reforms in order to address the body’s waning support from the American people. Specifically, her campaign noted, she backs “requiring Justices to comply with ethics rules that other federal judges are bound by and imposing term limits.”

Not mentioned is the popular progressive position of increasing the number of justices on the Supreme Court, also known as Court-packing, which Harris previously expressed an openness toward during her 2020 presidential bid. She later avoided questions on the subject during a vice-presidential debate with Mike Pence.

A significant portion of the Harris-Walz platform revolves around the legislation Harris has vowed to pass into law if elected president. Among these are the PRO Act, which expands labor protections, as well as the Public Service Freedom to Negotiate Act, which protects the right of public-sector employees to organize and join a union. She’s also promising to sign bills codifying Roe v. Wade and banning assault rifles.

Harris is also vowing to sign the bipartisan border bill that failed to pass in Congress earlier this year after Republicans came out in droves to oppose it. In her platform, the campaign highlighted the legislation’s funding of detection technology to stop drug trafficking as well as its addition of more border agents, a sign of how the Democratic Party is attempting to adapt to the raging debate on immigration happening among the American electorate.

However, these promises hinge on the Democratic Party’s ability to retain and gain seats in both chambers of Congress in November, a scenario that’s far from a given in this close and contentious election cycle.

  • England 2 – 0 Finland

    England 2 – 0 Finland

    [ad_1]

Harry Kane celebrated his 100th cap with two goals as England beat Finland 2-0 in the Nations League, on a night Wembley also paid tribute to Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The England captain and record goalscorer roared in celebration as his thunderbolt of an opener flew in off the underside of the bar just before the hour mark and he swept in a classy second for his 68th strike for his country with around 15 minutes left to play.

It was a fitting way for Kane to mark the occasion and underline the importance he has had for England and the impact he can continue to have, despite criticisms of the 31-year-old’s performances at Euro 2024. “It was the perfect night,” Kane said afterwards.

Up until the breakthrough, Finland goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky had frustrated Kane with a string of fine stops. But England’s main man – who also had a header ruled out for a narrow offside in the first half – wasn’t to be denied on a night which saw him presented with a special golden cap to mark his landmark appearance. He is just the 10th player to hit that total for England’s men’s team.

Kane celebrated his 100th cap with two goals as England beat Finland 2-0 in the Nations League

They were big goals for Lee Carsley, too, whose interim spell in charge has now delivered two wins from two, with England second in Nations League Group B2 behind Greece on goal difference. This was another positive performance, with Angel Gomes tidy on his first senior start, although Finland – resolute in defence and a threat on the break in the first half – made England work.

    England team news

England made four changes from the win over Republic of Ireland, with Angel Gomes making his first senior start, while Ezri Konsa, John Stones and Rico Lewis came into the backline. Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi and Levi Colwill dropped to the bench.

The last time these sides met, Eriksson, who passed away last month, was in charge. England edged that World Cup qualifier in 2001 with the help of another fierce strike from a Three Lions captain, David Beckham.

Wembley pays tribute to the late Sven-Goran Eriksson
    Image:
Wembley pays tribute to the late Sven-Goran Eriksson

This contest wasn’t expected to be so close as that 2-1 victory but the Finns – beaten 3-0 in their Group B2 opener by Greece – frustrated Carsley’s side, with centre-back Arttu Hoskonen twice sliding in during the first half to deny Kane tap-ins after his ruled out header, while Hradecky recovered to keep out Bukayo Saka’s deflected shot and Trent Alexander-Arnold fizzed two efforts wide just before the interval.

    England’s centurions

Harry Kane joins the following players in winning at least 100 caps for England: Peter Shilton, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Bobby Moore, Ashley Cole, Sir Bobby Charlton, Frank Lampard and Billy Wright.

At times England were worryingly open. Aberdeen’s Topi Keskinen was rapid on the counter but wasteful in the final third, shooting off target from two swift charges up the pitch which saw England’s defence exposed by an absent midfield. And that was all after Rico Lewis had to block former Norwich City ace Teemu Pukki’s shot from inside the box after a sharp throw-in routine from the visitors.

But England were more secure in the second half and, after Hradecky kept out a Kane free-kick and overhead, the opener eased any concerns of an upset. Substitute Noni Madueke came up with the assist for the skipper’s second, Eberechi Eze was lively and Rico Lewis looked comfortable throughout, with Alexander-Arnold again impressing at right-back.

But Kane’s double and the ovation for Eriksson will be the lasting memories of another successful outing as interim boss for Carsley, whose audition for the permanent post has gone well so far.

    England captain Harry Kane:

“It was the perfect night. On my 100th cap, I wanted to make the night as memorable as possible. To score the two goals and help the team win was almost perfect. The first goal tonight is right up there [among my best for England]. It was nice to see it come off the underside of the bar. On the night of my 100th cap, both goals will go down as among my favourites for sure.

On if he wanted to stay on to try to score a hat-trick: “I had enough shots to get the hat-trick! Lee spoke about a lot of games coming up so there were no hard feelings.”

On defying his critics and using them as motivation: “From a young age, I was doubted to go on and achieve what I’ve done and that has helped me keep focus. You’re always going to get criticism as a player and when things aren’t going your way, there’s a hunger inside to perform and maintain this level and keep pushing. I want to keep pushing the boundaries and I showed that tonight. Come October, I will be ready to go again.”

Analysis: A night to remember for Kane

Sky Sports News’ senior reporter Rob Dorsett:

“We can dissect the performance by Lee Carsley later (the pretty passing, tasty technical show, fluid formation, but sometimes over-elaborate final ball). Tonight was about one man, England’s captain and all-time leading goalscorer – who is now that little bit further ahead of the rest.

“In truth, Kane might have had four or five goals, but for his nemesis Hradecky in the Finland goal. And for his party-pooping manager, who took him off with 10 minutes to go.

“Sixty-eight goals in 100 games is extraordinary. And the man for the big occasion delivered again, big time.

“When he said on Monday he wants to score 100 goals in an England shirt, it sounded optimistic. Does it now? Captain, centurion Kane, take a bow. This is your night.”

Carsley: We’re moving in the right direction

England interim head coach Lee Carsley:

“It was important we got the results but more importantly we got the performances. You want to enjoy watching the team play on the side of the pitch and be exciting. To score four goals in two games is good and I think we could have scored more but I feel we’re moving in the right direction.”

Will the feeling of being uncomfortable go away? “I still get that with the U21s to be honest! I just want the players to do well and I feel that pressure to create those opportunities for them in effective areas. Hopefully we have done that over the last two games.

“You always need competition. We need that all over the pitch and I’m thinking about the game tonight but it wasn’t long afterwards I was thinking about the next squad, how that might look and which players might be coming into form. Competition in this squad is very high and so I think we will see some movement. We have two camps before the World Cup qualifiers start so it’s important we’re in a strong position.”

    What’s next?

England’s Nations League campaign continues next month when they host Greece on October 10 before going to Finland three days later.
