The ballet world is mourning the loss of Michaela DePrince, who passed away at the age of 29. She developed a passion for dance from a young age, mastering everything from pirouettes to pliés. On Friday, September 13, her team announced her passing on Instagram: “With pain in our hearts, we share the loss of star ballerina Michaela Mabinty DePrince, whose artistry touched countless hearts and whose spirit inspired many, leaving an indelible mark on the world of ballet, and beyond.”
The statement continued, “Her life was one defined by grace, purpose, and strength. Her unwavering commitment to her art, her humanitarian efforts, and her courage in overcoming unimaginable challenges will forever inspire us. She stood as a beacon of hope for many, showing that no matter the obstacles, beauty and greatness can rise from the darkest of places.”
As we remember Michaela’s impact, here are five facts about the late ballerina compiled by HollywoodLife:
Her full name is Michaela Mabinty DePrince.
Michaela was born in Sierra Leone, Africa, on January 6, 1995.
Michaela became a ballerina after moving to the United States. Her parents died during the civil war in Sierra Leone, and she was placed in an orphanage where she was mistreated due to her vitiligo. At that time, she came across a magazine cover featuring a ballerina, which inspired her to pursue ballet as her dream. She was adopted by Elaine and Charles DePrince in 1999 and moved to New Jersey with her adoptive family. At age five, she was enrolled in the Rock School for Dance Education (RSDE) in Philadelphia.
Michaela gained recognition after starring in the documentary First Position, which followed her and other dancers as they prepared for the Youth America Grand Prix dance competition. She later appeared on Dancing With The Stars and in Beyoncé’sLemonade segment “Hope.” Michaela used her platform to advocate for children in war zones.
Michaela’s cause of death has not yet been determined. Although she has left this world, her team stated that “her brilliance and legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were touched by her story, for generations to come.”

The cop who put his knee in Tyreek Hill‘s back and aggressively slapped handcuffs on the NFL superstar during a traffic stop last weekend has been accused of excessive force in the past, TMZ Sports has learned.
According to Miami-Dade Police Department records we obtained, officer Danny Torres has received numerous complaints since joining the MDPD back in October 1996.
TMZSports.com
The records show that on six separate occasions, he was accused of misconduct, including force violations as well as improper procedures. Torres was also investigated for his use of force at least 13 times as well.
The records show he’s been disciplined quite a bit in his decades-long career too … receiving written reprimands as well as multiple suspensions — with one ban in 2018 lasting 20 days.
It should be noted, though, Torres has also received over two dozen commendations during his tenure — including one award for professionalism in May 2023.
Torres is currently on administrative duties … as MDPD officials have launched an investigation into his behavior during the traffic stop involving Hill outside of Hard Rock Stadium last Sunday.
Miami Dolphins
Hill has claimed Torres was too rough with him during the incident … and believed the actions should have led to his firing. Torres’ reps, meanwhile, have argued his conduct was justified due to Hill’s lack of cooperation at the scene — and have asked for his reinstatement.
Hill was given two citations during the encounter — one for careless driving and one for a seat belt violation. He’s since played in both of the Dolphins’ games, logging 154 receiving yards on 10 catches.
There’s nothing quite like a freshly baked scone with a hot cup of tea. They’re delicious any time of year, but with the cooler weather creeping in, what better way to enjoy than with scones infused with pumpkin goodness. Imagine yourself wrapped up in a blanket on a fall morning, with nothing but these pumpkin scones and a hot cup of your favorite tea or freshly brewed coffee.
In this pumpkin scone recipe, we combine typical scone ingredients like all-purpose flour, sugar, butter, cream, and egg, but give them the pumpkin spice treatment with pureed pumpkin (canned is fine), and warm pumpkin loving spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves. While the spices are listed in the recipe instructions individually, you can also use your favorite pumpkin spice blend instead.
Here are a Few Tips To Making Your Scones Best Ever!
Make Sure All Your Ingredients Are Fresh!
If you’ve tried making scones in the past and they just didn’t turn out the way you’d hoped, it may be because that flour or baking powder isn’t fresh.
Check the date on your ingredients. If they’re nearing expiration, consider replacing them for the best baking results.
If You Don’t Want a Tough Scone, Don’t Overwork The Dough!
One key to making great scones is to not handle the dough too much. You want to just gather the ingredients together just until the dough is just formed, cut them into wedges, and freeze before baking.
Use Pastry Flour For A Light And Airy Scone
While all-purpose flour is fine to use for scones, pastry flour which has a lower protein content will make for a scone that will rise higher while having a much lighter, airier and less dense texture. Scones as light as a feather are what we all want.
Need A Gluten-Free Variation?
For a gluten-free version of these pumpkin scone sub out your favorite gluten-free flour at a ratio of 1:1.
Don’t Want To Make The Maple Glaze?
As an alternative to making the maple glaze, brush the tops of the scones with milk or cream. Then sprinkle with coarse sugar before baking for a crunchy, sweet and sparkly top!
If you make the glaze (and we hope you do), adding maple extract to the mix will take these Pumpkin Spice Scones for a more intense maple flavor experience.
You should be able to find it at the grocery store, but we like this inexpensive Beanilla Maple Extract.
It’s also a great flavor profile to add to cookies, pies, pancakes, waffles or whipped cream anytime you’re craving the flavors of fall.
Drain and Chill the Pumpkin
Whether using canned or fresh, watery pumpkin puree will cause these scones to flop. Drain away any excess liquid and give it a chill before mixing in.
Don’t Skip This Important Step
Before baking, freeze the pumpkin scones right on the baking sheet lined with parchment paper for at least 30 minutes. Make sure the scones aren’t touching or they will freeze together.

MAKING THE SCONES
The Dry Ingredients
2cupsflour
1 tbspbaking powder (aluminum-free is best!)
1/4tspsalt
1/4cuplight brown sugar
1/8cupconfectioners’ sugar
1tspcinnamon
1/2tspnutmeg
1/4tspginger
The Wet Ingredients
1/2cupbutter, frozen and then grated (1 stick)
1/2cupcanned pumpkin puree, drained of any excess liquid and chilled
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you don’t have parchment paper, grease with butter or a non-stick cooking spray instead. Tip:Keep the grated butter chilled in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
MAKING THE SCONES
Sift all the dry ingredients (and the pecans if using) into a large mixing bowl and stir well.
Using 2 forks or a pastry blender, incorporate the chilled butter into the flour until you get pea-sized coarse crumbs. You can also achieve this using your fingers by gently rubbing the flour into the butter with your index finger and thumb. If using this method place the flour/butter mixture back into the freezer for a few minutes to rechill as the warmth from your hands will soften the butter.
In another small bowl, whisk the wet ingredients together (pumpkin, egg, cream).
Create a well in the middle of the flour/butter mixture. Very gently stir the wet egg mixture into flour/butter mixture and stir just until a dough forms but is still crumbly.
Sprinkle flour onto your work surface and form the dough into a 6-inch round. Brush with cream. Cut into 8 wedges, then place them about 1 inch apart.
Chill for at least 30 minutes in the freezer. This will ensure the scones keep their shape and rise properly.
While the scones are chilling, preheat the oven to 400°F (200° C) with the baking rack placed in the center. Brush with a little milk or melted butter and then bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until lightly browned.
MAKING THE GLAZE
While the scones are baking put the glaze ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl or heat gently in a small saucepan. Microwave for 30 seconds and stir until smooth. ORStir all the ingredients in a small saucepan over low heat and whisk until there are no more lumps from the sugar and the glaze is smooth. Remove from heat, allow to cool slightly and then drizzle over the scones. For a thicker glaze add more powdered sugar. For a thinner glaze add a little more maple syrup.
Notes
♥ Maple extract is an optional ingredient in the glaze, but will give these scones a burst of lovely maple flavor. It’s a nice flavoring to have in your baking pantry anytime you want an infusion of maple flavor. Think cookies, pies, pancakes, waffles, whipped cream and more! ♥ Keep a batch of these Pumpkin Spice Scones unbaked in the freezer and bake when you’re ready for Pumpkin Spice Scones on the fly!
While there’s a growing body of academic research which suggests that social media can have negative impacts on mental health, there are also positives, including enhanced connection, support, finding interest communities, and more.
But which is more impactful, the negatives associated with social comparison and exposure, or the positives of connectivity.
According to this report commissioned by LG Electronics, the balance is actually fairly split.
As per the data (based on responses from 2,000 Gen Z Americans):
75% of respondents associated social media usage with negative impacts on their mental health
54% felt that they had little control over the content displayed in their social feeds
80% of respondents associated social media with a positive impact on their mood.
So there’s the good and the bad, though it’s interesting to also note that so many people don’t feel like they understand the controls at their disposal to manage their feeds.
On balance, then, it does seem that many people get enjoyment from the short-term dopamine of social media, but the longer term impacts may still be overly negative.
That’s why regulators have had so much difficulty in setting usage rules or parameters, because there are no definitive answers on the true impacts.

Donald Trump held his first post-debate press conference on Friday at his Los Angeles–area golf club, but he didn’t have much of anything to announce. Instead, he mostly read a prepared speech repeating dozens of criticisms of Kamala Harris, complained about the moderators of the debate, and reiterated racist attacks on migrants residing in Springfield, Ohio, and elsewhere — though he notably abstained from further promoting baseless cat-and-dog-eating conspiracy theories about the community. He also took questions from reporters — about his extremist campaign companion Laura Loomer, the downturn in Trump Media stock, and several other topics. Below, our running account of what happened as it happened.
Amadou Onana has already matched his best Premier League scoring season for Everton by getting the opening goal in each of Aston Villa’s two wins so far. He has the chance to make it three against his former club at Villa Park on Saturday.
Onana’s £50m summer switch was an intriguing one. Sean Dyche called it “a business decision” due to Everton’s financial situation. But for Villa to break their transfer record suggested they saw much more in him than he had shown at Goodison Park.
Former Everton player Michael Ball summed up the mood among Everton supporters when describing the move as an example of the “wrong team at the wrong time” – even claiming Tim Iroegbunam, signed from Villa, has already shown more than Onana did.

But there is a recognition too that this is a player with so much natural ability that the prospect of the now-23-year-old midfielder eventually putting all of the parts together – perhaps finding the right team at the right time – makes him too tantalising to ignore.
“We signed Amadou Onana because he is young and has big potential,” Unai Emery tells Sky Sports. “We believe in his potential.” The Villa boss will also believe that he is a coach capable of coaxing far more from a young player who is still learning the game.
It has been a major adjustment for Onana. During the international window, the Belgium international spoke of the long days, the lengthy training sessions, the tactical detail that he has had to take on board, something for which Emery has long been notorious.
Interestingly, while Dyche was talking in his pre-match press conference of giving Iroegbunam space before loading him with too much information, Emery was at Villa’s training ground telling Sky Sports of the work that needs to be done to help Onana.

Amadou Onana has described Unai Emery as one of the best in the business
Onana can get to a ‘high level’
Even after their summer tour of the United States, it is a process that has only just begun. The difference between the player Onana is right now and the one Emery thinks he can be is vast. “The gap is at the beginning big, bigger than we analysed,” he says.
“But we are confident to increase his level in this gap to get to the level where we can think of him as a very good player in the future. He is [already] a very good player but we think he can improve and get to a high level as a player and help us a lot in this way.”

Highlights from the Premier League clash between West Ham and Aston Villa
Perhaps it should not be a surprise that the adjustment is significant. Onana has left the team that played the most long balls in the Premier League last season for one that played among the fewest, only 25 more than short-passing experts Manchester City.
While away with Belgium, he said: “Here we play more on possession. You usually stay on the ball a lot longer. Sean Dyche wanted to see more direct football. Long balls. A lot of second balls. In the national team, I get the ball more. It suits me a little bit better.”
Onana’s pass-completion rate of 93.3 per cent with Villa is up from 84.9 per cent. It is a crude statistic, early days indeed, but it hints at his ability to keep possession, and while his goals have attracted attention, he has shown he can take care of the ball.
Potential to partner Kamara
Emery does not see Onana as a direct replacement for Brazil international Douglas Luiz, who has left for Juventus. “We added two players with the similar characteristics to Douglas,” he says. “Youri Tielemans last year and Ross Barkley this year.”
Instead, he argues that Onana has “more or less similar characteristics” to Boubacar Kamara, the fan-favourite midfielder currently out through injury. “We want two similar players in each position or players with the versatility to play different positions.”
Onana can do both because Emery insists that the two could also line up alongside each other. “They can play together, Kamara and Onana. If we were thinking he could not play with Kamara, maybe it would not have been very easy to sign him,” he explains.

“But we are thinking with Kamara, with Ama, with Barkley and with Tielemans, they can play [in any combination of] two players or we could even play with three of them together in our structure that we have. Of course, we signed Enzo Barrenechea as well.
“He is a young player who could develop well himself, improving and becoming important for us. We decided to let him to go on loan and in the future we want to add him and for him to join us, playing in our structure as well as an important player.”
Who is Enzo Barrenechea?
Enzo Barrenchea is a 23-year-old Argentine midfielder signed from Juventus this summer and then loaned out to Valencia

Everton test for Emery
That is for the future. More immediately, there is Everton at home. Victory against Onana’s former club on Saturday evening, a first of the season in front of their own supporters at Villa Park, would be sure to move Emery’s side back into the top four.
The style of the two teams may be different but Dyche has Emery’s respect. “Last year, they came here to play in the Carabao Cup and they beat us. They won and they deserved to win. I know the coach, I know the players. They are very competitive.

“They are coming here needing points. They are going to play focusing 100 per cent on their characteristics as a team with the players, with the style that they have. But I respect them a lot. We have to try to focus ourselves as well on our game plan.
“We have won two matches but it is not enough. We have to continue improving.” It is a message for everyone ahead of this match. But it is a message relevant to their record signing, in particular. Onana is a talent. Emery wants him to be so much more.
