JWST finds distant galaxy with “impossible” light signature | by Ethan Siegel | Starts With A Bang! | Sep, 2024

This photometrically derived image of galaxy JADES-GS-z13-1-LA, as acquired with a variety of JWST NIRCam photometric filters, showcases a bright galaxy that has no signs of light at wavelengths below ~1.7 microns. The intergalactic medium is extraordinarily efficient at blocking that shorter-wavelength light, but why this galaxy displays a bright hydrogen emission line that isn’t blocked presents a mysterious puzzle for astronomers. (Credit: J. Witstok et al., arXiv:2408:16608, 2024)

Hydrogen emission lines have never been seen earlier than 550 million years after the Big Bang. So why does JADES-GS-z13-1-LA have one?

Ever since its launch, JWST has revealed the cosmos in unprecedented light.

This region of space, viewed first iconically by Hubble and later by JWST, shows an animation that switches between the two. Both images still have fundamental limitations, as they were acquired from within our inner Solar System, where the presence of zodiacal light influences the noise floor of our instruments, and cannot easily be removed. The extra presence of point-like red objects in JWST images, also known as “little red dots,” has finally been explained, but other puzzles still remain. (Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Christina Williams (NSF’s NOIRLab), Sandro Tacchella (Cambridge), Michael Maseda (UW-Madison); Processing: Joseph DePasquale (STScI); Animation: E. Siegel)

The widespread discovery of early, bright, ubiquitous galaxies puzzled many.

This tiny fraction of the JADES survey area, taken with JWST’s NIRCam instrument, showcases relatively nearby galaxies in detail, galaxies at intermediate distances that appear grouped together, and even ultra-distant galaxies that may be interacting or forming stars, despite their faint nature and red appearance. Even though we’ve been performing JWST science for over two years, we are only beginning to probe the full richness of the cosmos with JWST. (Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, B. Robertson (UC Santa Cruz), B. Johnson (CfA), S. Tacchella (Cambridge), P. Cargile (CfA))

Years of research was needed before we understood why they were so numerous.

The galaxies that are members of the identified proto-cluster A2744z7p9OD are shown here, outlined atop their positions in the JWST view of galaxy cluster Abell 2744. At just 650 million years after the Big Bang, it’s the oldest proto-cluster of galaxies ever identified. This is early, but is consistent with simulations of when the earliest proto-clusters should emerge from the most initially overdense regions. (Credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, Takahiro Morishita (IPAC); Processing: Alyssa Pagan (STScI))

However, a new mystery has just arisen with detailed measurements of a new, ultra-distant galaxy.

In between the two large, prominent foreground galaxies shown here, JWST has imaged a faint red object that was originally identified as an ultra-distant galaxy candidate: JADES-GS-z13-1-LA. After a spectroscopic study was performed, this galaxy has been confirmed to be at a redshift of between z=13.01 and z=13.05, placing its age as coming from when the Universe was only between 325 and 330 million years old. (Credit: J. Witstok et al., arXiv:2408:16608, 2024)

Known as JADES-GS-z13-1-LA, it appears typical of very distant galaxies in many ways.

  • Why Was Bryce Young Benched? Update After Andy Dalton Was Chosen – Hollywood Life

Why Was Bryce Young Benched? Update After Andy Dalton Was Chosen – Hollywood Life

    [ad_1]

In a sudden twist, Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was benched by Coach Dave Canales, and he was subsequently replaced by Andy Dalton. However, Bryce wasn’t benched for any injuries; he is the first QB in years to be selected in the No. 1 common draft to be benched for non-injury-related purposes. So, why was the player replaced by Andy? Find out everything we know, below.

Why Was Bryce Young Benched by Dave Canales?

According to ESPN, Coach Canales said that benching Bryce was his decision in the end. He also discussed the choice with general manager Dan Morgan and executive vice president Brandt Tillis.

“Certainly a lot of parties involved there, and ultimately this comes on me,” the coach explained, per the outlet. “My No. 1 responsibility is to help the Panthers win, and so, this move puts us in the best chance to do that.”

The coach added that he watched the most recent games in which Bryce had played. In the end, he ultimately “had to make the decision that was best for the team.”

“I certainly take it personal,” Dave pointed out. “This is about building a culture, this is about building a football team that plays to a certain style, and that’s my main focus. And above all, it’s to help the Panthers to win. So, that’s what the decision was about.”

Bryce had a career-low of 6.4 total QBR by the time the Panthers lost against the Los Angeles Chargers. The athlete also spoke out following the Panthers’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite getting benched, he noted he’s “very blessed” to be where he is in his career.

“I’m very blessed,” Bryce said during a press conference. “I’m grateful for this challenge. Not an ideal start, but God does everything for a reason. I have faith in that.”

    Who Is Andy Dalton?

Andy is a quarterback who previously played for the Cincinnati Bengals, the Dallas Cowboys, the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints before joining the Panthers.

According to ESPN, Andy admitted that he “wasn’t expecting” Coach Canales to replace Bryce with him, but he had “been praying for another opportunity.”

“When I came here, I wasn’t sure if I was going to get another opportunity to start again,” Andy confessed. “And so, I’m really looking forward to it. I’m excited about what’s ahead.”

As for the coach’s decision to bench Bryce, Andy acknowledged, “It’s a tough situation. I’ve been on both sides of it, and it’s hard on everybody. But for me, I mean, I’m looking forward to it.”

Is Bryce Young Coming Back to the Panthers?

For now, Bryce is not playing for the Panthers as a QB. His future with the team is still unknown. The football player was a fan-favorite for years after becoming a rising star on the University of Alabama’s Crimson Tide team. After playing a successful junior year, Bryce decided to skip his senior year and enter the 2023 NFL Draft, which is when the Panthers selected him first overall.

  • Recipe: Nectarine Crisp (Gluten-Free, Grain-Free)

    Recipe: Nectarine Crisp (Gluten-Free, Grain-Free)

    [ad_1]

One of the best things about the summer season is the amazing bounty of fresh fruits that are available.  There’s strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, watermelons, peaches and one of my absolute favorites – the nectarine! Juicy, sweet, and little tart, there is nothing better than a perfectly ripe nectarine on a hot summer day. Wonderful as a healthy snack on its own or sliced into salads, the nectarine is just darn delicious. But have you ever found yourself with an abundance of nectarines and are looking for a new and creative way to use them? We thought, why not bake them into a healthy version of a crumbly, buttery nectarine crisp? Plus, it’s gluten free and grain free. Here’s how we did it!

    Nectarine Crisp Recipe

First  Step: We began by slicing all our nectarines and removing the pits. If you’re wondering how to properly cut up a nectarine or other stone fruits (peaches, plums, apricots, etc.) without hacking them to bits you can check out this article on How to Pit Apricots, Plums, Nectarines, & Other Stone Fruits Like a Chef.

    prepping nectarinesprepping nectarines

Second Step: Next we measured out the dry ingredients into a bowl, mixed them together and then cut in small pieces of cold butter to create the crisp or crumble. Is there a difference? Call it what you like at the end of the day its delicious. We decided to make this Nectarine Crisp gluten free using a combination of blanched almond flour, oats, brown sugar and pecans for a little extra crunch and nutty goodness. If you don’t have pecans you could always substitute almonds or walnuts. For those with a nut allergy you could skip them entirely.

Third Step: Toss the cut nectarine slices with a little sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. A few dashes of vanilla extract and then the nectarines are spooned into a dish for baking. We used these mini cast iron serving dishes greased with butter because they’re adorable. If you decide to bake this nectarine crisp in smaller, individual sized baking dishes the baking time will be much shorter.

Getting the nectarines ready for baking in a crisp or crumble recipeGetting the nectarines ready for baking in a crisp or crumble recipe

The nectarine crisp was baked for about 30 minutes at 350 degrees. You’ll know it’s finished when the top is a nice toasty brown and some of the baked fruit should be bubbling around the sides. Almond flour has a tendency to toast quickly and can burn easily. Make sure you bake it on the middle rack of your oven and as always keep an eye on it. If it does start to brown but, you feel the fruit isn’t quite ready yet cover it with foil and continue baking.

This gluten-free and grain-free nectarine crisp is a yummy twist on the classic crisp while using healthy and hearty ingredients. Tons of summer flavor without all the guilt. Don’t have enough nectarines? Try adding in peaches, plums, or berries.  In place of the almond flour, you can always substitute regular wheat flour, cassava flour or a gluten-free blend with a 1:1 ratio.
