    Why You Shouldn’t Use Physical Education As Punishment

    Think about any time you’ve seen “army boot camp” portrayed in pop culture — are you picturing the traditional drill sergeant, ordering his troops to do endless laps and push-ups, as punishment for their errors that day?

    Now, with that scenario in your mind, imagine it being played out by children and teenagers at school — and instead of drill sergeants, their teachers are at the helm. Believe it or not, it’s actually quite common in certain areas of the country for teachers to have students do physical activities as punishment for misbehaving.

    While this may have been perceived decades ago as a way to ‘toughen kids up,’ it’s a trend that ought to be falling out of favor by now – particularly when children today are already less likely to be active than generations before them.

    If you’re a teacher yourself, you know how impressionable students can be. Reinforcing the idea that exercise equals punishment promotes negative feelings towards physical activity.

    The Problem with Physical Punishment

    While some feel that running a few laps as punishment sounds reasonable, this can have an adverse effect on a child’s psyche that lasts for decades. Researchers have found that PE teachers and coaches think physical punishment is an effective way to show students that there are consequences to their actions; they’re not wrong, and in fact, that’s exactly the problem. Physical punishment happens to work a little too well.

    When we demand physical activlity to punish misconduct, the message we’re sending — loud and clear — is that physical exercise is a terribly unpleasant activity, and something we all should try to avoid. And, our children are certainly hearing it. At a time when not enough children (or adults, for that matter) are getting the recommended amount of daily exercise, the last thing we should do is reinforce the idea that physical activity is something to dread. If kids are already trying to find reasons to be less active, viewing exercise as a punishment is all the more reason not to do it.

    This mentality can carry over into adulthood as well, leading to an aversion towards physical exercise for the rest of one’s life – naturally pushing a person in the direction of inactivity, obesity, and other health problems. The goal of any physical educator should be to teach students that exercise is a positive and productive way to spend time, rather than something to rebel against.

    To add to the pile of psychological and physical health repercussions of this trend, there’s even more serious reason not to use physical education as punishment: it could be illegal in your state.

    That’s right. It’s actually against the law in 29 states – deemed a form of corporal punishment. The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) states that “Administering or withholding physical activity as a form of punishment and/or behavior management is an inappropriate practice.”

    So while your school’s PE teacher or team coach may think it’s perfectly fine to have students run drills as a disciplinary measure, it might be breaking the law – and acting against the best interest of the students.

    Better Alternatives for Student Discipline

    Teachers and coaches often struggle to find methods for disciplining students that are both appropriate and effective. This may account for why some still prefer to go the route of physical education as punishment; it’s easy to dole out, it’s over fairly quickly, and a heavy workout can wear a student out by exhausting them. For the sake of the children and their future physical health habits (not to mention the law), teachers and coaches should avoid the easy route, and strive to find more appropriate ways to discipline the class troublemakers.

    On the flip side of this trend, some teachers go in the opposite direction, banning misbehaving students from participating in recess; in fact, 77% of teachers prevent children from taking part in recess in order to diminish bad behavior. Unfortunately, this extreme isn’t ideal, either.

    Taking away children’s outlets for exercise can also skew their perception of activity and participation. Although the presumption is that children will learn that getting exercise is a privilege (the opposite of using it as punishment), it also eliminates their daily chance to interact socially and physically at school. Researchers have found that recess acts a “reset button” for students’ cognitive function, so removing it (for any reason, good or bad) can actually set students up for failure the rest of the day.

    Instead, look into disciplinary tactics that don’t involve the threat of overexertion, or forced physicality. Children, especially in their formative years, need to be able to develop their own boundaries when it comes to their own comfort with physical activity. Though it’s good to keep them moving – which is why banning recess is a bad idea – pushing them into exercise under negative circumstances leaves a lasting impression. The important thing should be to promote physical activity (through phys ed classes, recess, and so on) as a fun and positive way to spend time.

    If you’re facing ongoing issues with a student and you’re at a loss, talk to your school administrators to see what they advise as appropriate punishment. Disciplinary tactics may include calling a meeting with the student’s parents, or assigning detention. While there can be some argument for banning a student from participating in sport, it can be looked at as a last measure to try to curb negative behavior.

    Make Exercise Fun, not Fearful

    Physical education teachers and coaches know, better than anyone, the importance of physical activity for a long and healthy life. They’ve devoted their careers to instilling healthy values in children, and inspiring positive associations with exercise. They may not realize that sometimes, their attempts at discipline are acting against those very values.

    Forcing students to run laps or do push-ups as penance for bad behavior has long-ranging effects that may turn them away from physical activity altogether. Even just threatening to add extra sit ups, jumping jacks, and drills — whether you act on it or not — promotes an unhealthy aversion towards exercise, as a weapon that can be used as a threat.

    Keep the focus on activity as a positive and fun pastime, rather than something to be feared — it’ll go a long way towards fostering a lifelong love of movement.

    4 Dos and Don’t For Physical Education In The Classroom

    Here are four dos and four don’ts for incorporating physical education into the classroom:

    Dos

    1. Do integrate short physical activities: Incorporate brief movement breaks or exercises between lessons to help students stay focused and energized.
    2. Do promote inclusivity: Ensure all students, regardless of physical ability, can participate in physical activities by offering modified exercises or alternative options.
    3. Do link physical activities to academic content: Use movement-based activities to reinforce learning, such as using physical games to practice math or spelling.
    4. Do encourage teamwork and cooperation: Design activities that promote collaboration and communication among students, fostering social skills and a sense of community.

    Don’ts

    1. Don’t use physical activity as a punishment: Avoid making students do physical exercises as a consequence for misbehavior, as it can create negative associations with physical activity.
    2. Don’t focus solely on competition: While competitive games can be fun, ensure they are balanced with non-competitive activities to avoid alienating students who may not excel in sports.
    3. Don’t neglect safety: Always prioritize safety by providing clear instructions, ensuring the physical space is free of hazards, and supervising activities closely.
    4. Don’t disregard individual differences: Recognize that students have different fitness levels and abilities, and avoid pushing students beyond their limits or comparing them to one another.

    • Garlic: Freshly minced garlic is one of the best ingredients to pair with shrimp (just ask this brown butter spicy shrimp), and along with the other veggies, it adds depth and complexity.

    • Cajun Seasoning: You can use a store-bought spice blend or try this homemade cajun seasoning.

    How to Make Louisiana Casserole

    Trust me when I say this is an easy recipe to follow. Most of the ingredients are ready to go! You just need to sauté the veggies, heat the sausage, and cook the shrimp, and dinner is served! The whole family will love this one. Here’s how everything comes together:

    1. Prep: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
    2. Sauté Veggies: Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Then add the onion, red, and green pepper to the skillet and sauté until the vegetables become tender.
    3. Sauté Sausage and Shrimp: Add the garlic, sausage, and shrimp to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, sauté until the shrimp are mostly pink.
    4. Combine All Ingredients: Add the vegetables and meat to the baking dish along with the rice, tomatoes, and cajun seasoning. Stir everything together.
    5. Mix the Topping: Mix the parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper, in a small bowl. Then sprinkle the top of the casserole with this mixture.
    6. Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the rice has had time to soak in any excess juice.
    7. Rest and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!

    Louisiana Casserole Tips and Variations

    It’s hard to get this casserole wrong. It really is so simple to put this casserole together and it tastes amazing! But here are a few tips and substitution ideas so it turns out exactly how you like it!

    • For the Topping: For the breadcrumb topping, I used plain breadcrumbs. You can try panko breadcrumbs as a substitute.
    • Thaw Frozen Shrimp: If you use frozen shrimp, be sure to thaw it completely before cooking it with the sausage and veggies. 
    • Pre-Cooked Rice: To save time, I like to use pre-cooked rice that you heat in the microwave. 5-minute rice should also work just fine.
    • Sausage: This recipe calls for andouille sausage, but you can use a kielbasa or other link sausage of your choice!
    • Spice Level: Want to spice things up? I recommend adding a seeded and diced jalapeño to the skillet with the bell peppers and onions. You can also mix in some red pepper flakes for that extra kick of heat!

    Storing Leftovers

    This Louisiana casserole has the best texture when it is served fresh out of the oven. However, leftovers can be stored and enjoyed for a few days after cooking. This dish makes a great lunch for the next day! Here are my tips for storing and reheating leftovers.

    • In the Refrigerator: Stored properly in an airtight container, leftovers will last up to 4 days in the refrigerator.
    • Reheating: I recommend reheating in the microwave until warmed through. I always start with using 30 second increments, so I don’t over cook the shrimp.
    • Freezing: I do not recommend freezing this recipe.

    • In a small bowl mix together the parmesan cheese, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper. Top the casserole with the breadcrumb mixture.

    • Place the dish in the oven and bake for 20 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the rice has had time to soak in any excess juice.

    • Remove from the oven and allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving.

    If you are using frozen shrimp, thaw it before cooking. 
     
    You can use jumbo or mini shrimps in this recipe, the shrimp I used was a medium-sized, standard shrimp fresh at the deli of my local grocery store. 
     
    I used minute rice for this recipe but you can make regular rice with a rice maker.  To get 3 cups of cooked rice you will need to cook about 1 cup of dry rice.

    In our modern American diet, we’re told that salt is bad and we should avoid it at all costs. But the truth is it’s not the villain it’s often made out to be! It turns out that it’s actually very beneficial to our bodies. There’s some age-old evidence that consuming the right kind of salt daily (unprocessed and unrefined) can be very beneficial for our health. That’s why I love to make sole water!

    By increasing salt intake, you provide your body with key electrolytes needed to help it run smoothly. While eating salt is great, sometimes I find it hard to get enough of it on my food without it tasting too salty.

    If you want to increase hydration and electrolytes to support your health and wellness, give sole water a try! It’s easy to make and requires just two ingredients.

    What is Sole Water?

    Sole (pronounced so-lay) is water that’s fully saturated with unrefined salt. Often made with pink Himalayan salt, this concentrated salt water is a great way to increase your electrolytes.

    Many people add salt to their water for its health benefits. Sole water isn’t the same as drinking water with salt. It’s water that has fully absorbed the maximum amount of salt (26% actually…. thanks, high school chemistry!). Think of sea water and that’s similar to sole.

    While drinking salt in your water is a good practice, sole gives you more electrolytes. We lose electrolytes when we sweat or fast. It’s a great way to replenish these minerals because it provides sodium along with magnesium, calcium, iron, and potassium in trace amounts.

    The type of salt you use is key! Regular table salt is overly processed. Manufacturing strips it of many vital minerals. Factories often bleach and add chemicals to the salt to keep it from clumping. You’ll need unprocessed natural salt (Himalayan, Remond, or Celtic sea salt) to make sole.

    Why Drink Sole Water?

    The health experts have told us for years that salt can be harmful, so drinking salt water may sound counterintuitive. However, multiple studies show drinking seawater (also concentrated salt water) can have a variety of health-supporting benefits. Some countries have used sole for centuries. I drink sole water every day but especially when I’m active (and sweating!) or when I’m fasting.

    It’s interesting to note that the conventional recommendation for many of these problems includes removing excess salt from the diet. Table salt can certainly have a negative effect and is best avoided. However, natural salt is less processed and contains trace minerals that aren’t in table salt. Natural salt is incredibly nourishing for the body.

    Sole Water Benefits

    • Helps Hydration – Our body is made of salt water. During sleep, the body naturally repairs and detoxifies. It uses a good amount of water in the process. Consuming sole first thing in the morning helps the body rehydrate.
    • Helps the Body Detoxify – People have used salt for centuries to preserve food. It’s also used as an anti-inflammatory mouth rinse. Because of its antibacterial properties, water made with salt can be useful for the body’s natural detoxification.
    • Improves Sleep – Research shows that a diet low in sodium disturbs sleep. Adding sole to your daily routine boosts sodium and other mineral levels that help you sleep.
    • Boosts Energy – The minerals in sole help boost energy throughout the day. A 2019 study shows that people who had higher sodium intake had more energy.
    • Improves Digestion – A 2020 randomized control group found that drinking salt water stimulates the digestive system. This promotes food absorption and naturally relieves constipation.
    • Regulates Heart Rate – Low sodium diets interfere with the heart’s electrical signals, increasing the risk of irregular heartbeat, or arrhythmias.
    • Improves Blood Sugar – Research shows that a high-salt diet enhances insulin regulation, while a diet low in salt increases insulin resistance. Some people note improved blood sugar levels after using sole.
    • Natural Antihistamine – Salt is a powerful natural antihistamine. This action is likely due to its balancing effects on the body, and I’ve noticed this personally.
    • Relieves Muscle Cramps – Since drinking sole regularly and using magnesium, I don’t get leg cramps anymore, even after extreme exercise or during pregnancy. A 2022 review of 8 studies on consuming salt water showed faster recovery after exercise and also improved performance.
    • Weight Loss – By improving digestion and nutrient absorption and increasing hydration, sole can help promote weight loss.

    Sole is an inexpensive addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle, and it’s incredibly easy to make.

    How Do I Make Sole?

    As sole is simply salt and water, the quality of the salt is extremely important. While typically made with pink Himalayan salt, you can also use Redmond Salt or Celtic Sea Salt. These unprocessed natural salts all have roughly the same amount of trace minerals, such as magnesium and potassium.

    Ayurvedic practices often use Himalayan salt to balance the body’s doshas (energies). You want to make sure to use unprocessed, natural salt.

    I like to use mostly Himalayan salt, with a small amount of Redmond Salt or Celtic Salt added. Redmond Salt has the mildest flavored salt of the three, so if you’re new to sole water, that’s an easy one to start with.

    Sole water is saturated with natural salt minerals. It’s great for digestive health, leg cramps, hydration, sleep, and more.

    • Fill the glass jar about ¼ of the way full with Himalayan salt, Celtic sea salt, or Real Salt, or a mixture of the three.

    • Add filtered water to fill the jar, leaving about an inch at the top.

    • Put on the plastic lid and shake the jar gently.

    • Leave on the counter overnight to let the salt dissolve.

    • If there is still some salt on the bottom of the jar the next day, the water has absorbed the maximum amount of salt, and the sole is ready to use.

    • If all of the salt is absorbed, add more salt and continue doing so each day until some remains on the bottom. This means the water is fully saturated with salt.

    • To use: Mix 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of the sole into a glass of water and drink every morning on an empty stomach. Do not use any metal utensils to measure or stir.
    • Salt water is highly corrosive so avoid using metal utensils or a metal lid so it doesn’t oxidize.

    How to Use Sole

    After making the mixture, store it at room temp. It will last indefinitely as salt is naturally antibacterial and antifungal. Add more water and salt as needed to keep up the amount in the jar. Just watch to make sure there are salt crystals at the bottom of the jar after letting it sit overnight. That means the water has fully absorbed the salt. If there aren’t any extra crystals, add more salt and let it sit overnight again.

    To drink, add 1/2 – 1 teaspoon to a glass of water each morning and drink on an empty stomach. Don’t add more, especially when first starting! If this causes a detox reaction or headache, work up slowly. You could also try adding lemon to your water to make it more palatable.

    Sole Water Side Effects

    When first starting, sole could make you nauseous. If that’s the case, try starting with less. Although it works best when consumed on an empty stomach, you can also add 1/2 – 1 teaspoon to 32 ounces of water and drink it throughout the morning.

    Sole can also irritate the stomach or cause diarrhea. If this happens, stop taking it for a few days until your symptoms clear up. If you want to try again, start slowly with a small amount and work your way up.

    Who Can Drink Sole?

    If you have kidney stones or disease or high blood pressure sole water may not be a good option. Conventional advice says adding more salt to your diet with these conditions could make it worse. However, there is some evidence that says otherwise. If you have these conditions check with your natural healthcare practitioner before consuming sole.

    Two house flippers buy similar deals—but one’s profit is double the other.

    Two wholesalers buy equivalent houses—but one offloads his for a $25,000 profit in a day, while the second struggles for two months to net $5,000.

    If you want something done, a lot of people can do it. But if you want excellence, the field of qualified applicants narrows.

    This illustrates a critical point: How something is done is not nearly as important as who is doing it.

    Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy wrote a book about this critical topic. It’s called Who Not How: The Formula to Achieve Bigger Goals Through Accelerating Teamwork. As we’ll explain, the lessons of this book are crucial for passive investors.

    Here’s the premise: When entrepreneurs and managers plan a new project or try to grow their firm, they typically ask the wrong question. Instead of asking, “How do we do this?” they should be asking, “Who can do this for us?” 

    Shifting from a how-mentality to a who-mentality is a game changer for passive real estate investors.

    Why Shift to a “Who, Not How” Mindset?

    Unless you’re a solopreneur by choice, you must assemble a team. Who you put on that team will make or break your results and your future. Look at any great NBA basketball team for proof.

    Apple pioneer Steve Jobs was obsessed with this practice. By hiring the most creative, ingenious team members, Steve believed he could produce over 50 times the results produced by an average employee. Jobs said, as quoted in Inc. Magazine:

    “I noticed that the dynamic range between what an average person could accomplish and what the best person could accomplish was 50 or 100 to 1. Given that, you’re well advised to go after the cream of the creamA small team of A-players can run circles around a giant team of B and C players.” 

    Those who implement this powerful principle achieve a dual benefit: Their achievement levels rise, and they achieve radically more freedom—a massive win-win for everyone involved.

    What are some specific benefits of adopting this mindset?

    • More time: Let someone else do what they’re good at so you can focus on the mission.
    • Less stress: Working in your “zone” will result in more joy and fewer headaches.
    • More focus: Those who delegate their weaknesses are free to focus on their strengths.
    • More money: Fewer distractions and more focus translate to more profits and wealth.
    • Better relationships: Delegating, collaborating, and partnering will result in a level of joy and harmony at work that a nondelegating workaholic could never dream of.
    • Greater purpose: Those who hire the right “who” aren’t bogged down in administrative details. This provides the energy to pursue your dreams and passions. 

    This Is a No-Brainer for Entrepreneurs, But How Does It Apply to Investors?

    I’m glad you asked.

    Many investors hear about the potential income-producing, tax-slashing, growth-yielding benefits of real estate investing. Though they have demanding full-time careers and lives, they try to acquire and manage real estate on the side. 

    It usually doesn’t work. Most are disappointed with the returns they achieve for the effort, hassle, and risk they exert. (It’s not like those house-flipping shows on HGTV!) Many quit and return to Wall Street’s casinos.

    We think there’s a better way. Those of you who have shifted from active to passive real estate investing appear to agree.

    Passive investors have figured out the “how” of the equation. That’s a good start. But to get to the next level, consider “who, not just how.”

    Who?

    Switching from active to passive, or starting there, is a great decision. While this may create time in your schedule and reduce the many risks and hassles of active property ownership, it is just the first step.

    Those who stop here often make dreadful mistakes that could actually increase their financial risk and destroy their investment nest egg. You’ve got to figure out the right “who.”

    Many passive real estate investors screw up royally at just this point. They experience the “aha” moment and decide to pursue a passive investment strategy—but then they choose the first operator they hear about, or the syndicator their friend just invested with, or the marketer with the slickest website or shiniest brochure.

    This is often a recipe for disaster. I should know. When I sold my staffing firm in 1997, I became a full-time investor. I invested in a series of deals that produced, at best, less-than-satisfactory returns. In several cases, I lost all my principal. 

    I was not really an investor at all. I was a speculator.

    I did little due diligence, investing in assets I knew little about and trusted others who had done the same. And I selected deals based on form over substance.

    I want to see you achieve a better outcome. And I might even be able to help.

    Most passive investors have full-time careers, families, and hobbies. The more they focus on their specialty, the less time they have time to research real estate and other investments. This is where so many make big mistakes.

    I’ve been investing in real estate for almost a quarter-century. The more I learn about due diligence, the harder it becomes.

    How could this be?

    It’s because the deeper I dive and the more time that goes by, the more things I discover that could go wrong. (Examples abound!)

    I hate to discourage you, but if you’re a newer passive investor, you should know that due diligence is hard. It takes a focused effort (typically over months) and knowing what to look for and where to find it. 

    Who, not how

    This is where “who, not how” comes into focus. If you’ve already decided to invest passively, I recommend you choose the operator first and the deal second.

    A mediocre operator can screw up a great real estate deal. But a great operator can turn most mediocre deals into profitable investments. I can virtually guarantee you’ll be a better investor if you choose the operator first.

    That’s a great “who”—but that’s not the only one.

    You shouldn’t just choose the operator before the deal. You need to select the right operator.

    And that’s no simple feat. In fact, as I mentioned, it can be grueling.
