Stocks Falter While Havens Gain on Mideast Strife: Markets Wrap

    [ad_1]

(Bloomberg) — The persistent rally in stocks was knocked for a loop Tuesday as investors retreated to safer corners of the market when the conflict in the Middle East intensified.

    Most Read from Bloomberg

Haven assets were bid up with bonds, oil, gold and the US dollar all advancing after Iran fired a barrage of missiles at Israel following an advance of armed forces into Lebanon. The US is actively supporting preparations to defend Israel, according to an earlier report.

Gold climbed above $2,670 an ounce during the trading day while oil briefly topped $71 a barrel.

“Markets are in wait and see mode,” said Kathleen Brooks, research director at XTB. “The next 24 hours will be critical to see how far this situation escalates and whether the rush to safe havens was justified.”

If the conflict blows over, she expect stocks and tech shares to recover. The tech sector was the session’s worst performer with Apple Inc. and Nvidia Corp. sinking around 3%. The Nasdaq 100 trimmed a more than 2% loss to a 1.4% drop in afternoon trading. The S&P 500 fell 0.9% while Treasuries held onto an advance.

The clash eclipsed the signals from Tuesday’s economic data. The US ISM price index fell by the most since May 2023, while US job openings rose in August to a three-month high, at odds with other readouts indicating slowing demand for workers. Treasury yields remained lower with the 10-year hovering around 3.74%.

“Today’s reports should weigh down the 10-year yield, dollar, and employment service stocks, though the payroll release is more influential,” according to Evercore ISI’s Stan Shipley, alluding to Friday’s highly anticipated employment readout. “However, geopolitical stories out of the Mideast are more important for Treasury markets.”

A longshoremen’s strike was also stirring up angst as the longer traffic at major US container ports is shuttered, the bigger the economic losses. JPMorgan Chase & Co. estimates the stoppage will cost as much as $4.5 billion a day.

Investors will also get a chance to hear from vice presidential nominees JD Vance and Tim Walz in their sole debate of this election season in US afterhours. The would-be VPs are trying to win crucial swing voters in the lead up to November.

Shares of Nike Inc. weakened in postmarket trading after the athleticwear maker reported quarterly revenue that missed estimates.

Wall Street’s fear gauge — the VIX — spiked higher, touching a key level that usually indicates more market swings are in store.

Tuesday kicks off a historically positive, though often volatile, period for equities. The S&P 500 set its 43rd closing record on Monday notching a third-quarter rally that capped the longest such winning stretch since 2021.

“October has been a much friendlier month to bulls from start to finish, but in between it hasn’t been a walk in the park,” according to Bespoke Investment Group strategists. The S&P 500’s average intramonth peak-to-trough decline of around 4.6% is the largest of any month, according to Bespoke data going back to 1945.

To Michael Kantrowitz, chief investment strategist at Piper Sandler & Co., stocks are reflecting “an immaculate economic outlook.”

“The issue I see for any meaningful upside move for equities here is that there is essentially no risk priced into equities,” he said. “If rockets fly, markets will react even more.”

In money markets, swaps trader are wagering on a one-in-three chance the Fed will deliver another half-point cut in November, but that may not pan out as expected, Larry Fink warned.

“The amount of easing that’s in the forward curve is crazy,” Fink, the chief executive officer of BlackRock Inc. said in an interview with Bloomberg Television. “There’s room for easing more, but not as much as the forward curve would indicate.”

Elsewhere, Euro-area inflation slowed below the European Central Bank’s 2% target for the first time since 2021, prompting money markets to add to bets on another quarter-point decrease by the ECB this month. ECB President Christine Lagarde said the bank is growing more optimistic about reining in price pressures.

Winning $1.13B Mega Millions Ticket Yet To Be Redeemed

    Last updated on: October 1, 2024, 03:20h.

On Tuesday night, March 26, a lucky lottery player purchased a physical Mega Millions ticket that hit the jackpot. The prize was worth $1.13 billion, the ninth-largest lottery reward in United States history.

    Mega Millions jackpot New Jersey
The winning Mega Millions ticket that won a $1.13 billion jackpot in March 2024 has yet to be redeemed. Luckily, the winner has almost another six months to come forward. (Image: New Jersey Lottery)

Over six months later, the ticket still hasn’t been redeemed. While many state lotteries give Mega Millions winners six months or less to redeem their prize, New Jersey affords winners a year.

The Mega Millions Consortium, which operates the popular interstate lottery game on behalf of 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, says most jackpots are redeemed within a few weeks or months. In a recent statement, the lottery group encouraged the person in possession of the life-changing ticket to come forward.

The winner should contact New Jersey Lottery as soon as possible to begin the claim process,” the Mega Millions Consortium notice read.

While it’s smart for major lottery winners to consult with legal and financial professionals to assist in deciding whether to take a lump cash sum or the full value of the jackpot paid out over a 30-year annuity, that process typically doesn’t take over a half-year. As the days drag on, it becomes increasingly likely that the winning ticket, worth a one-time cash option of $537.5 million, is lost.

    Spring Deadline

The New Jersey Lottery’s allowance of tickets being redeemed up to a year after the drawing means the $1.13 billion Mega Millions ticket retains its value until March 2025. The winner has until March 26, 2025, to file the claim before the ticket becomes worthless.

The winning $2 play was sold at the ShopRite grocery and liquor store in Neptune just west of Asbury Park. The winning numbers were 7, 11, 22, 29, 38, and the Mega Ball was 4.

Along with deciding on the annuity or cash option, the winner must choose whether to remain anonymous, as allowed through a bill that New Jersey lawmakers passed in 2020, or to make their identity public. The one-time cash option of $537.5 million would be before a federal tax of 37% and a state levy of 10.75%.

New Jersey’s tax on lottery winnings is among the highest in the country that trails only New York’s 10.9% tariff.

    Online Lottery Protection

Participating Mega Millions states have redemption window timeframes that vary greatly.

Oregon gives winners just 60 days, while three states give winners only 90 days — Iowa, New Mexico, and South Carolina. Most jurisdictions, 27 states plus D.C. and the Virgin Islands, provide winners with six months to come forward.

New Jersey is one of 13 states that provides a year for redemption. The others are Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Only nine states currently facilitate online ticket sales for Mega Millions and Powerball. New Jersey isn’t one of them, but the state does allow online lottery couriers like Jackpocket to purchase physical tickets on behalf of internet users based in the state.

Digital lottery plays prevent tickets from being misplaced, stolen, or accidentally damaged. When a winning jackpot is sold online, the ticket is secure and the winner will be approached by their courier or state lottery for ticket redemption proceedings.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 One UI 6.1.1 update has no new AI features

    [ad_1]

AI is the buzzword of the year for sure, and it’s also something a lot of smartphone makers (hi, Apple) are trying to gatekeep, only making it available on their latest devices. Samsung is kind of playing the same game too, it seems, but far less egregiously.

Still, it’s worth noting that the update to One UI 6.1.1 which brought new AI features to newer foldables is now rolling out to the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 without those new AI features like Sketch to Image and PDF Overlay. There’s also no Instant Slow-mo either.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 and Flip3 One UI 6.1.1 update has no new AI features

The update is a 2.2GB download, is identified by a string which ends with XH9, and will also give you the September 2024 security patch level. Despite its lack of new AI stuff, it does bring some new features, like a new way to answer incoming calls, the ability to double-tap the right side of the screen to move forward in videos, and a more powerful Auto Blocker with better protection against malware and security threats. You can even move a picture-in-picture window to split-screen view by dragging it to the side you want it on.

The changelog also highlights a lot of Samsung Health-related improvements, with a more detailed sleep analysis, new Wellness tips, and the ability to create your very own workout routines.

The new update is currently rolling out in Europe, and will surely expand to more markets in the coming days and weeks.

Switch emulator Ryujinx is kaput after Nintendo pressure

    [ad_1]

Nintendo has shuttered another emulator, this time putting an end to Ryujinx. The program was an open-source emulator for playing Nintendo Switch games on Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. A message shared today with the emulator’s Discord server stated that the developer was contacted by Nintendo with a deal to cease work on the project. No additional details were given about the conditions of that agreement. The same message was also posted on X:

The emulator will still function for anyone already running it, but the Github repository has been removed. Ryujinx also made some headlines last month for running the new  game at more than , vastly outstripping the Switch’s capabilities.

Nintendo has taken an aggressive stance on emulators, even teaming up with in 2023 to try and curb game piracy. Ryujinx is one of the more popular emulators it has taken on, but the game company also reached a settlement with the emulator Yuzu in March. It issued a whopping in May to try and remove all the Yuzu code hosted across different Github repositories.

  • Robert Englund Says He’s Too Old To Play Freddy Krueger Again

1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced the world to a new slasher icon: Freddy Krueger. The burned-up child murderer with a razor glove who hunts kids in their sleep to kill them was played by Robert Englund in eight films and a TV series. And while many might wish he would return to the role following 2010’s lackluster reboot, Englund says it ain’t happening.

In a new interview with Bloody Disgusting, the 77-year-old horror star was asked if he still had “one more” Nightmare on Elm Street movie in him. His answer was blunt but honest: “I don’t. I literally don’t.”

Englund went on to explain that he’s “too old” to be Freddy Krueger again in a live-action sequel. However, he did say he was open to doing a “gimmick” cameo of some kind and suggested a role he could play in a theoretical remake of Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors.

“I would love to be invited if they reboot Part 3, Dream Warriors, which I think is the most popular film of the franchise,” Englund told Bloody Disgusting.

“It would be fun to play one of the doctors. The great Priscilla Pointer, Amy Irving’s mother, was in that film. Maybe I could play her part as a male doctor that’s very cynical. A cameo wink to the audience that I don’t buy that there’s this dream demon that everybody’s having the same dream about. It’s in the tradition of remakes, especially with horror, to give an actor that’s been in the original a little cameo, so I think that would be fun.”

He also suggested that he could return to voice Freddy in a “high-end animated version” of A Nightmare on Elm Street, saying it would be “nice” to be asked to do that. However, he reiterated that he’s just too old to do play Freddy in a live-action movie again.

“I know I can’t do the fight scenes [for] more than one take now, one angle,” said Englund. “I just can’t be snapping my head or anything like that. I’m an old dog! Give me a break!”

  • Best Laser Cleaning Service Near You: The Ultimate Guide

Best Laser Cleaning Service Near You: The Ultimate Guide

    [ad_1]

In recent years, laser cleaning has emerged as a revolutionary method for restoring surfaces to their pristine condition. Whether it’s for industrial applications, historical restoration, or removing graffiti from walls, the effectiveness and precision of laser cleaning have made it a popular choice among businesses and homeowners alike. If you’re looking for the best laser cleaning service near You, you’re probably wondering what sets it apart from traditional cleaning methods and what surfaces it works on. Let’s delve into this innovative cleaning solution, its benefits, and why you should consider hiring a professional service like RenovateRx.

    What is Laser Cleaning?

Laser cleaning is a cutting-edge technique that utilizes high-intensity laser pulses to remove contaminants such as rust, paint, dirt, oxides, and other unwanted layers from a surface without causing damage. Unlike abrasive blasting, chemical treatments, or manual scraping, laser cleaning operates with extreme precision. It’s a non-contact, non-abrasive process that involves directing laser light at the surface to vaporize and dislodge dirt and coatings without affecting the underlying material.

    How Does Laser Cleaning Work?

Laser cleaning works through a process called ablation, where high-energy laser pulses are directed at the surface. The laser beam instantly heats and vaporizes the layer of dirt or paint, breaking the bond between the unwanted layer and the surface beneath. Because the laser can be precisely controlled, it removes only the contaminants, leaving the base surface unharmed. This process is effective on various materials and surfaces, making it ideal for diverse cleaning applications.

    Advantages of Laser Cleaning

    1. Eco-Friendly and Chemical-Free: Traditional cleaning methods often require harsh chemicals that can harm the environment and pose health risks. Laser cleaning eliminates the need for any solvents, acids, or detergents, making it a safe and eco-friendly option.
    2. Zero Damage to Surfaces: Since laser cleaning is non-contact and non-abrasive, it doesn’t damage the substrate. This makes it perfect for cleaning delicate surfaces like historical artifacts, intricate machinery, and sensitive electronic components.
    3. High Precision and Control: The laser can be adjusted to target only the specific layer that needs to be removed, making it highly precise. This level of control is not achievable with conventional cleaning methods.
    4. Versatility Across Multiple Surfaces: Laser cleaning can be used on metals, wood, concrete, stone, bricks, and even glass. This versatility makes it suitable for a variety of applications ranging from industrial maintenance to aesthetic restoration.
    5. Cost-Effective and Time-Efficient: Laser cleaning reduces the time and labor costs involved in manual scraping, sandblasting, or chemical treatments. It’s a quick process that delivers immediate results, saving you time and money.
    6. Minimal Maintenance Required: Unlike other cleaning equipment that can wear down over time, laser cleaning machines have minimal maintenance requirements, making them reliable and long-lasting.

What Surfaces Can Be Treated With Laser Cleaning?

Laser cleaning is highly versatile and works on a wide range of surfaces, including:

    • Metals: Rust removal from steel, iron, and aluminum; cleaning delicate parts of machinery.
    • Stone and Concrete: Effective for removing graffiti, dirt, and pollution from building facades.
    • Wood: Safely cleans without causing any discoloration or damage to wood grains.
    • Bricks and Masonry: Ideal for removing paint, moss, and other deposits on brick walls.
    • Glass: Removes unwanted films or coatings without scratching the surface.
    • Historical Artifacts: Can clean and restore ancient statues, monuments, and sculptures without affecting their integrity.

    Applications of Laser Cleaning

    • Industrial Use: Cleaning machinery parts, welding preparation, and removing rust or oxidation layers.
    • Conservation and Restoration: Safely cleans historical buildings, artifacts, and art pieces.
    • Automotive and Aerospace: Removes paints and coatings without affecting the base material.
    • Graffiti Removal: Restores building exteriors without damaging the underlying structure.
