Daryl Dixon season 2 continues to improve with week three’s
offering, “L’Invisible.” While I wasn’t particularly excited about
Carol and Daryl’s reunion, I was pleasantly surprised when she met Madam Genet.
    Here’s why.

I adore when showrunners reveal consequential characters’
origins. The episode begins with Madame Genet’s backstory. Like King Ezekiel, a
humble zookeeper, Madam Genet was a janitor who cleaned up after ill-mannered
schoolchildren at the Louvre. A job where she was invisible. As the janitors
discuss a possible strike, Madame Genet (Marion) remarks that the government
    will only screw people over.

In S5:E12 of the TWD, ‘Remember’, Carol counted on being
invisible when she arrived in Alexandria. As a result, Deanna Monroe gave Carol
a job cooking dinner for older residents. When Carol arrives at Maison Mere,
the man immediately assigns her to the kitchen because he could not see the
warrior woman she embodied. Once inside Genet’s compound, Carol witnesses the
execution and immediate reanimation of individuals by injection. Before she’s
discovered, she hears a researcher say, “We need soldiers we can
control.” Carol uses her position in the kitchen to somewhat recklessly
ask if anyone knows the American, Daryl Dixon. Given that the season consists
of only six episodes, it is necessary to expedite Carol and Daryl’s meeting.
Therefore, we can forgive Stéphane’s (the guy with the face tattoo) two-minute
revelation to Carol about the purpose of Madam Genet’s torture. Daryl is at the
Nest, and Carol tells her English-speaking professor that she will leave
immediately. She does—only to be caught because her English professor friend
traded information about her to Madam Genet to save his husband.

At the Nest, Sylvie prays for courage to protect Laurent.
Regrettably, she raced around, shouting for him. Trapped and fighting, Sylvie
plunges over a wall. Sylvie’s death felt like the old Walking Dead, which
regularly killed off characters you’ve come to admire. It’s affecting. Losang,
the spiritual leader of the Nest, exhibits more brokenness than I had
anticipated. His interpretation of Sylvie’s death is, “Her faith was
weak.” Moving forward with Laurent’s celebration, Losang explains that
because Sylvie loved Laurant, using her as the ‘hungry one’ made the test more
poignant. Losang manufactures a valerian root-honey drink for Laurent, which he
initially refuses. Losang insists, “Drink it anyway,” ostensibly
drugging the boy. Based on his actions, I wonder if Losang’s faith was as
    strong as Sylvie’s.

Daryl, Isabelle, and Fallou blended into the celebration
crowd by this time. Losang pulls Sylvie to attack Luarent. Daryl kills her.
Isabell and Fallou grab Laurent, and a chase ensues. Daryl orders Laurent to
wake up and take Isabell and Fallou to their secret training spot. Daryl
injures and kills countless Nest residents. Fallou and Laurent get away. Daryl
and Isabell do not. They end up in chains, separated by a thin stone wall.
Daryl tells Isabell about his faith in their return to America and Laurent’s
happiness. Daryl confides that he was once a man who was searching for the
unknown and discovered something—depaysant. Isabell says Je t’aime more herself
than Daryl. Daryl remained silent. Was she heard? Did he understand her? Does
    he feel the same way?

Betrayed by the English professor, Carol tells Madame Genet
the truth about her search for Daryl. She recounts tricking Ash into flying her
to France to find her daughter, landing in Greenland, and barely escaping
psycho-environmentalists. It doesn’t matter what Carol said because Madam Genet
knows where Daryl is. When questioned about her reasons for searching for
Daryl, Carol shrewdly responds that she wants to kill him. Carol’s gambit is to
make herself an instant ally by sharing a common interest with Madame Genet.
Madam Genet agrees to take Carol to the Nest. On the road, Madam Genet
describes Paris’ decline amid the viral outbreak. She recalls her confinement in
the museum, surrounded by religious artworks depicting suffering. She says she
only understood these works after the ZA. She explained that art seeks to make
sense of chaos and destruction in the world. Madam Genet says, “Prayers
didn’t help then and don’t help now. Religion is not hope; it is control.” It
is evident that Madam Genet harbors a dangerous distrust towards both the
government and religion. Lack of faith in others and in institutions often
leads to anti-establishment radicalism. Carol sees this in Madam Genet’s
actions, such as killing ‘volunteers’ to create super-soldier walkers and
making people eat off the floor. But will Carol’s realization be too late?

Laurent feels shaken when he considers all the people who
lost their lives as a result of the stories told about him. Faith is vital
because it brings hope, says Fallou. Laurent replies, “Daryl never
believed.” What does Laurent’s acknowledgement mean for Fallou and the
Union? Losang takes Isabell because she has always been faithful and open-minded,
unlike Daryl. Losang and Daryl discussed faith earlier. Losang condemns Daryl,
saying, “It must be hard living without faith, living only for
yourself.” Losang believes the Nest and Union are fuelled by the hope
faith provides, but faith is running out. Laurent ought to replenish it. Daryl
asks Losaang, “What if you’re wrong?” Like many cult leaders, Losang says,
“Then there is no point going on.” As they take Isabell, Daryl panics
and offers to reveal Laurent’s hiding place, but his pleas are ignored.

I enjoyed L’invisible. Apart from the speed at which Carol
found her way to Daryl in France, the story was well plotted and well executed.
I found beautiful symmetry between the episode’s focus on the Mona Lisa’s
portrait and Marion’s origin story. Da Vinci’s masterwork depicts the Mona
Lisa’s smile as concealing something invisible and mysterious. Similarly,
Madame Genet’s values and emotions influence her behavior, but they are
invisible to others. This is also true for Carol. This is true for us all,
which is why The Walking Dead, in all its forms and fiction, is so relatable.

How are you liking Season 2 so far? At the end of the show,
Madam Genet is seen killing people outside the Nest, including Carol, most
likely to make super walkers. We know that Carol and Daryl will get back
together, but what will happen to Isabell? Does Daryl ever say “I love you
back”? Send me a message, and we’ll talk about it.

    Overall Rating:

    9/10

  • X Avoids EU ‘Gatekeeper’ Designation and Requirements

X Avoids EU ‘Gatekeeper’ Designation and Requirements

    [ad_1]

Yeah, I’m not sure that this is the win that Elon Musk and Co. seem to think that it is.

Today, Reuters has reported that the European Commission has ruled that X does not meet its designation as a “gatekeeper” platform, which will mean that X won’t be beholden to the EU’s more stringent operating requirements for big tech players.

Under the EU Digital Markets Act (DMA), platforms identified as gatekeepers must enable third party systems to inter-operate with their services (e.g. Meta needs to let other messaging apps send messages to WhatsApp), while they also need to let business users to access any data that they generate in their use of the gatekeeper’s platform, and provide ad performance info for independent verification.

The aim, essentially, is to ensure fair competition in the market, by ensuring that these big platforms don’t squeeze out smaller players because of their dominant position.

And after investigation, the EU has reportedly decided that X will not have to meet these requirements.

Which is no doubt a relief to Elon and Co. because of these additional obligations. But still, that also means that EU officials have decided that X simply doesn’t hold the market power or influence to require additional safeguards.

In order to qualify as a gatekeeper platform, EU officials need to determine that the company:

    • Has a significant impact on the internal market
    • Provides an important gateway for business users to reach end users
    • Holds an entrenched and durable market position

X, according to EU investigators, doesn’t meet these thresholds. Which means, really, that EU officials simply don’t see X as being a key player in the European market.

Which makes some sense. X has 105 million monthly active users in Europe, which has declined by around 12 million users since August 2023. The steady decline in X usage, combined with the challenges in its ad business, do suggest that X is losing relevance, and influence. And when compared to Meta’s 250 million EU monthly actives, and TikTok’s 142 million MAU, combined with their respective ad market share and cultural dominance, you can see how X is not currently considered to be on the same scale as these other platforms.

But still, Elon and his supporters are angling this as “a win for innovation and free speech”, as Elon continues to push back against “overreaching bureaucracy” and EU red tape that could strangle the app’s growth.

So he’s fighting back against EU regulation by ensuring that his platform remains less relevant and influential?

I don’t know, it seems odd how political leanings overpower logic and reason in this sense, but the bottom line is that X is not being held to the EU’s gatekeeper platform standards because it’s simply not impactful enough to sway EU markets to the same degree as these other businesses.

That doesn’t seem like a great endorsement of the app, and/or Musk’s management. But I guess the truth is what you make it.

  • How To Build and Increase Customer Equity (2024)

How To Build and Increase Customer Equity (2024)

    [ad_1]

Can you put a price on relationships? If you’re a company, you can—and doing so can make those relationships (in this case, the one between brand and customer) even stronger. That value is known as customer equity, a quantitative metric that can help you understand how each stage in the customer journey translates to financial profit.

Learn how to calculate customer equity and how to improve it over time.

    What is customer equity?

Customer equity is a useful metric that reflects the estimated total value of the business-customer relationship. If a single customer’s potential is measured by customer lifetime value (CLV), customer equity represents the combined CLV of your entire customer base.

Any measure of customer equity is a snapshot in time, and understanding it can help you dial in other key metrics in your business. For example, you can compare your customer equity against customer acquisition costs (CAC) and customer retention costs (CRC). Measuring what your company spends to acquire andretain customers, whether in marketing costs or customer relationship management (CRM) software, against how much revenue they’re likely to bring in, illustrates how your business is doing, as well as how robust its future prospects are.

Customer equity is considered a strong measure of a company’s total expected profitability (especially if you have plans to go public) and forecasted cash flow, because it reflects a large, loyal customer base that is expected to spend more than it takes to attract or retain them over time.

    How to calculate customer equity

Customer equity is the total value of all of your customer relationships over a set period of time, like one year. Time-boxing the data allows you to better track customer equity trends over time, especially as you hone your marketing strategies for future customers and experiment with budget allocation.

While there are many ways to calculate customer equity, the simplest (and quickest) customer equity formula is to multiply the average CLV by the total number of customers. Customer lifetime value uses average order values and purchase frequency to determine a customer’s projected value over their lifespan with your business. Once you know your CLV, you can confidently calculate your customer equity.

Customer equity = average customer lifetime value x total customers

    3 pillars of customer equity

Using the average customer lifetime value formula can help put a monetary figure on customer equity, but from the customer’s point of view, equity is influenced by three components: how aware they are of your brand, how much value they see in your offerings, and how loyal they are to it. These three pillars of customer equity provide a more qualitative understanding of the worth of your brand from your customers’ perspective.

    1. Brand equity

Brand equity refers to the overall brand association that the public has regarding your brand. Is your brand recognizable in a crowded competitive landscape? Is your offering uniquely compelling? Is it a mainstay in its category or a disruptor?

    2. Value equity

Value equity aims to capture the overall value of the brand from the perspective of the customer. Do they see your offering as a worthy investment? Does it bring value to their lives? Customers are willing to spend more with a high value equity brand, especially if you find ways to underscore the inherent value of what you’re selling while justifying a higher price point in your marketing campaigns.

    3. Relationship equity

Relationship equity reflects the strength of your customer relationships, best measured in brand loyalty. How likely is it that consumers choose you when given the option between your brand and its closest competitors—and how likely are they to recommend that decision to others? An emphasis on customer relationship management can help bolster relationship equity by prioritizing regular contact with your top customers.

    Ways to improve customer equity

There are plenty of ways, through both organizational structure and marketing strategy, to increase customer equity. Here are a few of the most impactful techniques:

    Solicit customer feedback

A customer’s unbiased assessment of your products and customer experience can be one of the best ways to identify your strengths and opportunities as a business. Solicit that input often for maximum effect: Think post-purchase and customer service surveys, community events, conversations on social media platforms, focus groups, and customer interviews.

Most importantly, act on what you learn. Making customers feel heard by following through on suggestions and feedback establishes trust—making them more likely to recommend you to their peers—and makes loyal customers feel more invested in the brand’s success.

    Personalize the customer journey

Tailoring online shopping experiences to individual customers can increase both conversion rates and average order value, as well as improve the overall customer experience—all of which have big implications for customer equity. Allowing customers to design their own subscription boxes, for example, or using a recommendation engine to surface products they are most likely to be interested in not only helps them find what they’re looking for faster, it shows you understand the need you’re serving.

    Provide excellent customer service

Excellent customer service is a fundamental piece of customer equity. Whether that means establishing a painless return policy or having someone on call to answer queries about product features and best practices, great customer service provides and reinforces value not just during the shopping experience, but beyond it.

Customer service teams should prioritize fast response times, friendly messaging, and an ability to solve problems quickly, but also find ways to exceed customer expectations in each interaction.

    Offer loyalty programs

Loyalty programs, or reward programs, not only encourage more purchases with discounts and point accumulation, they also make regular customers feel like an important part of the brand’s story. An increase in brand loyalty can increase sales and encourage repeat orders. Moreover, loyal customers may become advocates for your brand, recommending it to their network, an invaluable component of increasing customer equity.

    Solve pain points

Friction is the detriment of the customer experience—the motivating factor at the core of customer equity—so wherever possible, strive to make the navigation, discovery, and purchasing processes as smooth as you can. This gives customers confidence in your brand, reduces bounce rate and cart abandonment, and makes them more likely to return in the future.

    Customer equity FAQ

What are the 3 types of customer equity?

Customer equity can be improved through three interrelated perspectives: brand equity, which tracks brand awareness and reputation; value equity, the perceived value of your offering in the marketplace; and relationship equity, the strength of your customer relationships and brand loyalty.

How do you create customer equity?

Customer equity is a reflection of how much you can expect your customer relationships to generate during a set period of time, and it is powered by high customer engagement and customer satisfaction. To create customer equity, you not only need a high-quality product and high-quality experience, but you eventually need customers to spend more than it takes to get them in the door.

    Why is customer equity important?

A company’s customer equity is important because it is a quantitative measure of financial stability and customer loyalty. Understanding it can illuminate the efficiency of how you allocate various budgets—or speak to the chances of a brand’s survival. If a particular brand is wildly popular, for example, but its marketing budget far outspends its customers, its customer equity would be lower than its acquisition costs, which would bode poorly for its future.

  • Is Reddit the Future of Crisis Communications?

Is Reddit the Future of Crisis Communications?

    [ad_1]

    Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Photo: Getty

Let’s say you represent the most powerful government on Earth and would like to convey some information to the citizens of your country in a moment of crisis. We’re talking pretty basic stuff: How to apply for federal assistance after a series of massive natural disasters, the general state of the recovery effort, things like that. You’ve got a lot of options, more than ever in the history of mankind. You can issue a press release. You can call a press conference. You can have the president give a little speech or send surrogates out for interviews. You can communicate with state and local authorities who will use the channels at their disposal. You can post anything you want on all sorts of social media platforms and reach out to influencers, theoretically accessing a near-infinite audience.

This will all help, but it won’t necessarily work. Nobody pays attention to the channels you control. Traditional media is fragmented and its audiences are diminished and hyper-polarized. Lots of people are watching TV, but not the TV you need them to watch; everyone’s looking at their phones, but they’re not receiving your messages. Your posts on Facebook, which briefly assumed a role in basic civic communication across the country, are filtered through recommendation algorithms and submerged in slop. Your announcements on Instagram have no way to spread and people aren’t looking for them, anyway. Your posts on TikTok feel like a joke and mostly get distributed to random people in other states. Your posts on X, which used to be at least marginally helpful as a sort of straightforward institutional newswire, are barely visible and overwhelmed by conspiracy theories. It’s a little paradoxical, and if you’re in the business of communications, probably sort of discouraging: It isn’t just your propaganda machine that’s broken, it’s your basic means of reaching people in any way at all. It’s also darkly funny: Everyone can talk to everyone and now suddenly nobody can hear anyone.

Still, you’d like to get that FEMA phone number out there and clarify a few things. A weary social media manager pipes up from the corner of the office: I guess… we could post on Reddit? Reports the Verge:

Reddit isn’t the first place you’d think to see official statements and news coming from the federal government, but today, The White House is on the site making posts… The Biden administration’s “whitehouse” account has new posts in subreddits r/NorthCarolina and r/Georgia to discuss the federal response to Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton.

For years, the typical story about governments, politicians, or public figures showing up on Reddit focused on the unlikeliness of that match. Reddit was rowdy, weird, or nerdy, and it was sort of interesting or fun or strange for people with big platforms to show up there. In recent years, Reddit has grown from a large cluster of online communities into a sort of last refuge semi-protected habitat for online communities in general — that is, spaces where actual people gather to discuss or find information about certain topics or interests, organized and moderated by other actual people. Now, nobody is deigning to post on Reddit. They’re just hoping it might add to their audience a bit. It helps that /r/NorthCarolina is the sort of place where you might be able to post something like “hey, visit DisasterAssistance.gov” without getting drowned out by posts claiming that FEMA is going to seize your property.

Reddit is also coming into play for another (comparatively inconsequential) type of crisis: Brand meltdowns. At her Substack Link in Bio, Rachel Karten tells the story of KeithFromSonos, the Sonos employee who kept dutifully and patiently posting on the brand’s unofficial subreddit after a disastrous app update nearly tanked the company. The subreddit has a couple hundred thousand members, many of whom are pretty mad at the company. But they don’t hate Keith, who has been posting there for a while, and some even feel sorry for him. As a result, he can post straightforward updates without getting yelled at, unlike pretty much anywhere else, which got the attention of the company’s CEO — who then ended up heading over to Reddit, too.

To be clear, Reddit probably won’t help save Sonos from its angry customers, much less have any measurable effect on the response to hurricanes Helene and Milton — these are, in the grand scheme of things, fairly small communities full of people who otherwise don’t have too much trouble finding information online. And for its part, Reddit hasn’t grown without consequence. Community moderators have grown weary of volunteering for an increasingly profit-minded (and now public) company that takes them for granted, and the site’s size and new visibility on Google — the search company also sees Reddit as a rare source of authentic human activity, albeit for harvesting purposes — has caused an influx of spammers and bots looking to get a piece, all but setting a timer on Reddit’s eventual ruin. But in the meantime, Reddit is serving as an online information oasis of last resort, a channel through which extremely basic mass communication is still possible, at least for now.
