Riccardo Calafiori injury: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta’s problems mount ahead of Liverpool game | Football News

Mikel Arteta says Riccardo Calafiori’s suspected knee injury is “not great news” for Arsenal ahead of Sunday’s crunch game against Liverpool in the Premier League – live on Sky Sports.

Arsenal’s laboured 1-0 Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates was overshadowed by Calafiori having to come off injured in the second half after an awkward fall.

Calafiori, replaced by teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly, is the latest player on Arsenal’s growing list of potential absentees ahead of a huge game in the league against leaders Liverpool.

“He had to come off because he felt something,” Arteta said of Calafiori after the game. “I don’t know the extent of it so in that sense not great news.”

Arsenal will be without William Saliba in defence through suspension after his red card in the league defeat at Bournemouth, while Jurrien Timber has not played since the start of the month due to an injury.

Arteta is also unable to call on defensive duo Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney because of long-term injury issues, leaving him with limited options against Liverpool if Calafiori and Timber are unable to recover in time.

Martin Odegaard is another that remains out, while Bukayo Saka has missed the last two games with a hamstring problem, picked up with England. His injury status will be a huge focus in the coming days.

Arteta did not seem hopeful about Saka’s chances before the game. “I don’t know, he wasn’t able to train yet, so that’s unlikely,” he told Amazon Prime.

Ben White was removed at half-time against Shakhtar after picking up a booking and Arteta clarified after the game that this was only done to prevent another sending off for his side, rather than because of an injury.

“It was my decision to take him out,” said Arteta. “He had a yellow card and we’ve played enough with 10 men in recent periods. They had a lot of density on that side, a lot of players on that side, so I didn’t want to take any chances there.”

Arteta: ‘Tired’ Arsenal will be flying come Sunday

Arsenal looked “tired” by their own manager’s admission against Shakhtar, hardly encouraging ahead of the visit of Liverpool, but he is confident that his side will be re-energised by Sunday.

“We played two nights ago with players coming from internationals after flying from Brazil and many countries,” said Arteta, asked if he was concerned the fatigue would impact the Liverpool game.

“I was expecting a bit of a drop off. And the fact that we put so much in the first half and didn’t get the distance in terms of the scoreline, I think we paid a bit for that.

“Then we made life more difficult for us because we started give the ball away in not the right areas and then it was more open. That didn’t help. But we have now four days. Believe me, come Sunday we’ll be flying.”

He added: “We’ll review, have a day off, then two days to prepare the game. Sunday is far and we are more than comfortable that we’ll be in the right place.”

Treasuries Plunge Like It’s 1995 as Traders See Soft Landing

    [ad_1]

(Bloomberg) — The last time US government bonds sold off this much as the Federal Reserve started cutting interest rates, Alan Greenspan was orchestrating a rare soft landing.

    Most Read from Bloomberg

Two-year yields have climbed 34 basis points since the Fed reduced rates on Sept. 18 for the first time since 2020. Yields rose similarly in 1995, when the Fed — led by Greenspan — managed to cool the economy without causing a recession. In prior rate cutting cycles going back to 1989, two-year yields on average fell 15 basis points one month after the Fed started slashing rates.

Rising yields “reflect the reduced probability of recession risks,” said Steven Zeng, an interest rate strategist at Deutsche Bank AG. “Data has come in pretty strong. The Fed may slow the pace of rate cuts.”

The latest backup in yields shows how a resilient US economy and buoyant financial markets limit the options for Fed Chair Jerome Powell to aggressively lower rates. Interest swaps show traders are expecting the Fed to lower rates by 128 basis points through September 2025, compared with 195 basis points priced in about a month ago.

Global bonds have been sliding this week as investors weigh the potential of slower rate reductions, leaving a gauge of total return in Treasuries up just 1.7% this year through Monday. That trails the 4.3% gain in T-bills over that period.

The selloff extended slightly on Tuesday, pushing the 10-year yield up about one basis point after an increase of 11 basis points on Monday. The recent rise has brought the yield on the benchmark to around 4.2%, up from a 15-month low of 3.6% on Sept. 17 — one day before the Fed lowered borrowing costs by half a point.

On Tuesday, trading activities suggested that sentiment remains bearish, with a series of sales of block trades in 10-year note futures. In the options market, one trade targets the 10-year yields rising to about 4.75% by the option expiry on Nov. 22.

In 1995, the Fed slashed interest rates just three times — from 6% to 5.25% — in six months, after lifting them sharply. Yields on 10-year notes jumped more than 100 basis points 12 months later after the first cut that year, while two-year yields rose 90 basis points.

This time, rising yields also reflect growing concern that the Republican Party could take control of both the White House and Congress in the Nov. 5 election, potentially boosting the federal deficit and inflation.

Several powerful labor unions and trade groups rallied this morning in Northern Virginia to bring a casino to Fairfax County by way of Tysons.

Outside the Fairfax County Government Center before the Board of Supervisors Tuesday meeting, members of the Northern Virginia AFL-CIO, Unite Here Local 23, Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, Building Trades Unions, and SEIU Local 32BJ touted the economic and tax benefits that a casino could deliver the region. Assembled as the Fairfax County Jobs Coalition, attendees said a casino would create 5,000 good-paying union jobs with excellent benefits and $350 million in annual new tax revenue.

If you work in a union hotel or union convention center you know you’re going to be making good wages where you only need one job to live in Fairfax County. You can afford to live here with health care and pensions,” said Virginia Diamond, president of the Northern Virginia AFL-CIO.

“We’re out here advocating for the working-class residents of Fairfax County,” Diamond continued. “A union job is a life-changing job.”

Virginia State Sen. David Marsden (D-Fairfax) is expected to reintroduce legislation in January when the General Assembly convenes to designate Tysons as a permissible host city for a casino in the commonwealth. Currently, casinos are only authorized in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Bristol, and Danville.

Legislation passed this year to allow Petersburg to conduct a local ballot referendum to authorize a casino will be determined during next month’s Nov. 5 election.

    Jobs, Taxes

The unions campaigning to bring a casino to Northern Virginia argue that a resort and convention center, along with its many other amenities, would provide invaluable career opportunities for many area residents who are struggling to fend off inflation, higher rents and mortgages, and escalating property taxes.

Marsden says it’s his responsibility to give county voters options to ease rising property taxes, rates he believes will only go higher in the coming years as many of the county’s Fortune 500 companies negotiate new lease terms for their office spaces, with some expected to downsize amid more remote work.

Diamond says a casino would help “lift people out of poverty” in the notoriously expensive county, which is one of the nation’s richest. During the 2020 Census, Fairfax ranked fifth in terms of median household income at $128K. Neighboring Loudoun was first at over $147K.

“Every year my property taxes go up. I know this is going to bring a lot of tax revenue and that would take the load off my back,” said Nelson Aguilar, a county resident and union carpenter.

    Opposition Aplenty

The odds of a casino gaining local referendum support in Fairfax, at least at this juncture, are presumably long at best.

The wealthy residents largely opposed Marsden’s 2024 legislative gaming push and every homeowners association that has weighed in on the matter has been in opposition. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has also come out in formal opposition to a casino.

The opposition campaign — No Tysons Casino Coalition — plans to hold its own rally this Sunday, Oct. 27. Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Boysko, who represents parts of Fairfax and Loudoun counties, plans to be there.

This is where Fortune 500 companies make their home. This is not something they want in their community,” Boysko said.
