    [ad_1]

Presenting a new gallery exhibit “AROUND THE PARKS: MANHATTAN!” at Pleiades Gallery in Chelsea! New oil paintings by Ellen Bradshaw, one of our FAVORITE ARTISTS! Ellen’s work is equisite:)

There are the impressive imposing canyons of the urban jungle Manhattan. Then there are her quiet spaces. Whether large or small, oases of nature, offering calm and respite if only for a moment. Or a destination for the day. Places to let go of the bustling pace. To reflect. To let down one’s guard. To walk or run. Whether the majestic sprawl of her famous Central Park or a quiet garden that springs to life as a beacon of the neighborhood. A gathering place. A place to meet. Along the way or for the day.

The streets around the park tell stories. Of people and neighbors, of small-town life in the big city. And the trees of Manhattan. Reflecting and reminding us of the four seasons, pushing through the stubborn concrete, softening the hard edges, twisting and winding improbably. Filled with character, as are her people.

There are stories to tell. Within and around the parks. Oil on canvas!

Ellen Bradshaw’s work was influenced by the realism of the Ashcan painters, as well as the sense of color and atmosphere explored by the Impressionists. Ellen’s usual subject is New York City.
“I’m drawn to the common everydayness of life in the city, and perhaps what is hidden just beneath the surface of the ordinary. The reflective moody quirky streets of Lower Manhattan are my usual subjects – the neighborhoods, the personalities of her buildings, the majesty of her bridges, the streets transformed by snow or the colors of night, the lone figures of daily routine, the everyday intensity of the simple passing of moments against that in-your-face reality that is New York City.”

Ellen has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions and is the recipient of several awards. She has been President of Pleiades Gallery since 2000.

The show runs from May 13-June 7, 2025. Reception for the artist is Saturday May 17th from 3-6 pm.
    Gallery hours are 12-6 pm.

Presenting a new gallery exhibit “Manhattan: Dusk to Dawn” at Pleiades Gallery in Chelsea! New oil paintings by Ellen Bradshaw!

The City that never sleeps. New York splashed in oil on canvas in those between hours from Dusk to Dawn.

A bewitching stage set between realism and abstraction. Theatrical colors. Fireworks gracing the skies above the Brooklyn Bridge! Famous icons showing off their Glory! Rhapsody!

The sky no longer passive but alive with the Golden Hour, the Blue Hour. That intensity of color highlighting the magnificence of ordinary structures taking on a character of their own.
Artificial neon lights become a player as the anonymity of figures and wavering shapes weave in and out between the shadows of After Hours.

The mysterious movement of the night and murkiness of her weather. The coziness of the indoors calling. Beckoning bars and restaurants. Fearsome Magical Gotham!

And the promising Quietude of a morning dawn.

Ellen Bradshaw’s work was influenced by the realism of the Ashcan painters, as well as the sense of color and atmosphere explored by the Impressionists. Ellen’s usual subject is New York City.

‘Sunrise from the Artist’s Balcony’ NYC Art Exhibit

‘Sunrise from the Artist’s Balcony’ NYC Art Exhibit. The stunning vista that greets the artist Ellen Bradshaw each morning from her lower Manhattan 25th floor apartment balcony is the inspiration for her latest series of oil paintings “Sunrise from the Artist’s Balcony” at Pleiades Gallery. The show runs from April 16 through May 11, 2019 and the artist reception is open to all on Saturday, April 27 from 3-6 pm.

Obsession. Every morning I find myself drawn to my window on the 25th floor by a magical light show overlooking three bridges – Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg. And on out to the balcony with my camera several times, trying to capture “the moment” of the rapidly changing moments of colors and clouds.
How could the same view painted over and over hold my interest? How could I paint the masterpiece in the sky with mere oils??

The iconic bridges of New York, sometime mere silhouettes, appear like a backdrop stage set trying to command attention with the impossibly wondrous skies.

A tiny police boat keeps watch. Powerful freighters pass, toys against the heavens. Elysium. Empyrean. Eden. Utopia. Fervor. Bliss. Inferno. And a rather belated nod to the New Kid on the Block, 1 Manhattan Square, as it claims its place amongst the giants.

So many more paintings still unpainted. My tribute to NYC and the skies above her!
Bradshaw’s work was influenced by the realism of the Ashcan painters, as well as the sense of color and atmosphere explored by the Impressionists. She has shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and is the recipient of several awards. Ellen is President of Pleiades Gallery since 2000.

    November 4, 2017 – Artist’s Reception

Circling Manhattan Art Exhibit Ellen Bradshaw

A magical architectural cruise aboard the decks of the Manhattan, an elegant 1920’s-style yacht, inspired Ellen Bradshaw’s newest series of oil paintings “Circling Manhattan.” Cruising through the Hudson, East and Harlem Rivers and circumnavigating the island of Manhattan, passing under all 18 bridges, afforded a breathtaking perspective of the ever-changing NYC skyline and iconic sites and structures.

“I simply had to go twice – once on an idyllic early summer day in June with blue skies, sunshine and fairy-tale clouds …. on to a gloomy, moody, whipped-by-wind-and-rain October day!” Clouds and water provide a powerful backdrop for the skyline of NYC. Buildings and structures come to life in a theatrical drama of paint and brush. This intense interplay between clouds, weather, water, bridge and skyline brings a human emotional quality to the paintings through Bradshaw’s lively brushwork and moody palette.

Up on the Roof Art Exhibit

    April 19 to May 14, 2016

With her latest show, Ellen Bradshaw captures New York City in oils from her rooftops, balconies, and windows high above. Beginning with the stunning panorama from her own balcony on the 25th floor, Bradshaw paints lower Manhattan and her bridges through sunrise, fog, storm, and snow with lively brushwork and colors to capture the mood of weather and season. From the same balcony, Ellen paints views of the new Gehry Twisted Building, the Woolworth Building, Municipal Building, and courtyard views!

Bradshaw’s studio roof in the West Village affords views reminiscent of John Sloan’s rooftop paintings, a strong influence on Bradshaw’s work.

“Wherever I found myself this past year, inspiration struck…accidentally!!!”

Through a window view at HSS, (where her husband Joe underwent knee replacement surgery) Ellen paints Roosevelt Island on a frigid winter’s day, ice floes passing by on the East River….a waiting room in a doctor’s office reveals an unexpected view of the Freedom Tower looking up Ann St….a lawyer’s office high above Herald Square and Macy’s becomes a lively painting of Summer in the City….and Bradshaw climbs on top of forbidden benches at a rooftop bar to capture the views of the Empire State Building, water towers, and streets below on a moody gray blue day.

From the High Line NYC Art Exhibit

Up on the Roof Art Exhibit

A magical journey of 22 blocks captures the imagination of artist Ellen Bradshaw in her newest series of oil paintings “From the High Line” at Pleiades Gallery. The show runs from October 28 through November 22, 2014 and receptions are open to all on Thursday, October 30 from 5 – 8 PM and Saturday November 1st from 3 – 6 PM.

    October 28, 2014 11:00 am –

    Pleiades Gallery,
    530 West 25th St, room 405,
    NY NY 10001

This thoroughly unexpected inspiration of wildly beautiful nature against the gritty cityscape of New York 30 feet above the city streets takes the artist from the lush colorful lively palette of an early summer’s day in June to the stark whites and browns of the first snowfall in December. From the Meatpacking District through Chelsea and on to Hells Kitchen, the compelling juxtaposition of nature, rivets and steel, and the unusual vantage point of city streets below open the eyes and the heart to a truly visionary experience of New York!

Ode to the Brooklyn Bridge Art Exhibit

Ode to the Brooklyn Bridge Art Exhibit

In celebration of 130 years, Ellen Bradshaw paints a personal song to the Brooklyn Bridge with oils and brush.
The show runs from April 16 – May 11, 2013 at Pleiades Gallery, 530 West 25th St, 4th floor, NY, NY 10001
Receptions are Thursday April 18th from 5-8 PM and Saturday, April 20th from 3-6 PM.

Whether a sweeping sunrise from the artist’s balcony 25 flights up, or the awe inspiring walk across the span from day to night, Bradshaw’s brush work and color explore the changing faces of the bridge.

“Through dusky blue mist of soft rain…. to sun dancing across cables… into cacophony of night lights…. and the hushful dusting of a soft snow…. to capture even a glimpse of some of the glory of this most wondrous work of art designed by John Roebling…. this is my homage to the Brooklyn Bridge.”

4 Seasons in the West Village NYC Art Gallery Show

4 Seasons in the West Village NYC Art Gallery Show

An intimate show of new oil paintings depicts the artist’s favorite streets, haunts, and corners of the West Village where Bradshaw has her studio. For the artist, the village is a refuge from the rest of the city, and her paintings reflect the quiet charm and small town feel of the neighborhood..

    Artist Receptions:
    Thursday, October 6, 5-8 PM
    Saturday, October 8, 3-6 PM

    October 4-29, 2011
    Gallery Hours:
Tues – Sat 11-6 PM or by appointment

Bradshaw’s favorite West 4th Street view becomes the centerpiece of the show painted in each of the four seasons with lively brushwork and the artist’s personal sense of expressive color.

From long horizontal street views to more intimate shop portraits, Ellen captures that “slice of life simple moments in time” feel of the village…. with its solitary amblers, shop owners, bench-sitters, dog walkers, delivery trucks, and bicycles propped against street signs …… those familiar figures and comforting images of daily routine.

Sightseeing Pass, New York Pass, Go New York Card, CityPASS Compared

In MOST cases, a NYC Attractions Pass can help you save money. We review the New York Pass, New York Sightseeing Pass, Go New York (formerly New York City Explorer Pass) and New York CityPASS (kind of confusing, right?). Find out the best New York Attractions Pass, if you can buy the New York Pass in New York, how to buy a New York Pass @ Costco and more.

You can also download the NYC Attractions Pass Comparison for a side by side comparison with attraction prices. Please read the tips below on comparing the passes to help evaluate the right New York City Attractions Passes for you and your family. “Hidden” marketing behind the each discount pass is revealed and please read the Full Disclosure below.

    Types of NYC Attractions Passes

Day Passes – these passes offer entry (and often skip-the-line privileges) to around 80-100 attractions over a set number of days, usually 1-10 days. So, you’d buy a 3-day pass, or a 7-day pass and you can make up your itinerary as you wander NYC.

Flex/Attractions Passes – these offer you a set number of attractions over a number of days. For the Sightseeing Flex Pass, you do not have to know exactly which attractions you want to visit, just how many attractions. For other passes, you have to choose your attractions at time of purchase.

    NYC Sightseeing Pass

Choice of the FLEX Pass or Sightseeing DAY Pass. The Day Pass is good for a set number of days (1-10) and you can visit as many of 100 attractions as you want during your time in New York City. The Flex pass lets you choose how many attractions you want to see and decide which ones as you go, during your trip.

    New York Sightseeing Pass

Adult Prices range from $129 (1 Day) to $399 (10 Day). NOTE: The passes are almost always on sale and offer promo codes, so here is what I recommend:

    1. Go directly to the New York Sightseeing Pass Website to check out the details of the pass
    2. Compare prices at: New York Passes and NYC Attractions Passes, where there are always great deals and discounts

Using an average of $25 per attraction and 3 attractions per day, it makes the most financial sense to purchase the 3-10 Day Passes. The Flex pass makes more financial sense for a shorter trip.

You have 12 months from date of purchase to activate your passes, so try and buy your pass when they are on sale. Your Pass gets activated in NYC the moment you use it at an attraction or service. It is then valid for the number of consecutive days for which it was purchased, or the number of attractions selected. Each Sightseeing Pass attraction can be visited once. FLEX Pass customers have 30 days to use their attraction choices.

Using an average of $25 per attraction and 3 attractions per day, it is difficult to see the value in a 1 or 2 day pass.

However, the 3-10 day New York Passes are a good value, especially if you take advantage of some of the more expensive tours and attractions or use the 15% discount on a Helicopter Tour (about $100 per person for 8 minutes).

How to Compare NYC Attractions Passes

I would suggest using at least 2 hours per attraction as an average time and 3 as the average number of top attractions you will see per day. Four big attractions is aggressive, and that kind of schedule will leave you almost no time to wander, eat, window shop or see the “Insider” New York City.

You get the peak financial value out of most of the NYC Attractions Passes when you do a lot of NYC tours, such as a Hop On and Off Bus Tour, Bicycle Tours, Food on Foot Tours, Boat or Cruise Tours, NBC Studio Tour, Movie and TV Tours or the Sex and the City Tour.

As for shortcutting lines, there is no guarantee, but there may be an advantage. However, you can never shortcut a security line, such as the one at the Statue of Liberty.

Empire State Building – three of the New York City Discount Passes include admission to the 86th Floor Observatory (indoor and outdoor Observatory). It is an additional $15 for the 102nd floor (indoor only). The Sightseeing Pass does not include the ESB, but it does offer a $40 credit towards your ticket.

Museum of Natural History – The Planetarium Space Show is included only with the CityPASS. Museum access is a $23 suggested donation or admission to the Museum and Space Show is $25 at all times. The Planetarium and Space Show is a must-see for kids, and frankly, I think for all adults as well.

    CityPASS

    • Includes free general admission to the Museum, Rose Center for Earth and Space and Space Show
    • Additional discounted rate to all other special exhibits or films not included.
    • Special Exhibit or IMAX  Adult $9.50, Child $8

New York Pass and Explorer Pass

    • Includes free general admission to the Museum and Rose Center for Earth and Space
    • Discounted rates to any of the special exhibits or films that are not included with general admission.
    • Space show add Adult $12.50, Child $9.50, Special Exhibit or IMAX add Adult $8.50, Child $6.50 (2018 prices)

The Met now has paid admission for non-locals. MOMA and Guggenheim both have Pay-As-You-Wish days and times. However, you absolutely should donate something to the museums at all times, if it’s within your budget, and each New York City Discount Pass donates a portion of their proceeds to the Museums accordingly.

Statue of Liberty monument access is always free, but there is a cost for the Ferry ride. Complimentary Monument Access passes must be reserved in advance and they are timed to minimize security risks. None of these passes include access or a reservation to go INTO the Statue of Liberty Museum. Climbing to the Top of Lady Liberty’s Crown will cost an additional $3.00 and must also be reserved. Check all the details of your discount pass before you go.

All New York City Attractions Pass comparisons are for Adult passes only, assume no specials or discounts, which these companies very often have, and the dollar figures are rounded for simplicity.

Romantic New York City Vacation Reader Question:

    Romantic New York City Vacation

My boyfriend and I are planning a 3 day trip (Sun-Wed) and are interested in the beautiful views of New York, shopping, cuisine and nice neighbourhoods. We are staying at W New York. We really want to be “tourists” during the trip but, of course, we also want to have a look at New York as you (insiders) do. -by Eline, Mexico

    NYC Insider Guide Answer:

Great choice on your hotel (formerly the W New York, now The Washington,), right on 49th and Lex with the world famous Bliss Spa, Rande Gerber’s Whiskey Blue (a hot spot), close to subway, walking distance to Midtown, Rock Center, MOMA, Broadway and Times Square.

Let’s start with my ideal night in the Meatpacking District.

    • If you head down earlier in the day, browse around Theory, DVF, Jeffrey (shoes!), Stella McCartney and the other great stores.
    • Eat at any of the Meatpacking District’s Romantic Restaurants like, Revel, The Chester or even at the Whitney Museum.
    • Walk off dinner by checking out the Highline, NYC’s newest outdoor, second level park/walkway that runs from Meatpacking to Chelsea. It used to be an above ground railroad. Have a seat on one of the double wood lounge chairs and take in the view.
    • Come back down Little W 12th Street, have a cocktail at Plunge, the rooftop bar at the Gansevoort Hotel and/or one outside at the newly opened Standard Hotel (where I saw 3 celebs last Sat night).
    • Given your hotel location, I say skip the ESB and go to Top of the Rock – Compare for yourself and also check the Midtown East restaurant recs (above)
    • See one or two Museums
    • Spend time in Central Park, maybe eat at The Boathouse, rent bicycles or just walk around
    • Walk around the West Village for more eating and shopping. My favorite restaurants there are Spotted Pig, Blue Ribbon and Extra Virgin.
    • If you come down to Union Square – try Casa Mono, Union Square Café or Gotham Bar and Grill
    • When you go downtown, walk around Wall Street, see the Statue of Liberty (using an NYC Insider way), see the 9-11 Memorial and Museum, or check out the new One World Observatory, shop at Century 21 and maybe check out the South Street Seaport.
    • For more ideas, check out the One Day Itineraries from my NYC friends

Celebrate Anniversary in NYC Reader Question:

    Romantic New York City Vacation

Hello! My husband and I are celebrating our 10 yr anniversary, with our 1st trip to NYC!! So excited! Anyways, we are 28 yrs old… and staying at the Hotel Indigo, Chelsea (127 W 28th St).

We enjoy the “touristy” stuff… so any suggestions on entertainment, food (nothing too fancy), attractions etc… would be great! Staying for 5 nights @ the end of March…THANKS! – by Melissa(FL)

    NYC Insider Guide Answer:

Hi Melissa (great name) and Happy Anniversary. All the typical tourist attractions can be very romantic. The views from Top of the Rock and the Empire State Building, walking through Central Park, the Space Show at AMNH and most everything you will do.

Here are the highlights of what’s in the Hotel Indigo, Chelsea area (GREAT hotel choice!!!):

First, please read our neighborhood guide to Union Square/Flatiron district and the free map.

You are 3-4 blocks from the Flatiron Building, Empire State Building, Madison Square Park (grab a burger at Shake Shack), the Ace Hotel (great lobby bar with live music and a cool, 20’s crowd), A Voce is considered one of the most romantic restaurants in the city and 230 Fifth is an outdoor rooftop club (no cover charge, but the during the week, it’s not as crowded and you can have a nice dinner) with palm trees, heat lamps and a beautiful view of the skyline.

    Hope that helps!

    Romantic Dining Options

    by: Anrew

Obviously in NYC there are thousands of choices and everyone has an opinion. But I think you should definitely make your way to Alta for tapas one night for dinner, its one of the most romantic old style feeling places i’ve been to here, amazing food, good prices, and great service.

For a very new york dinner, i suggest a meal at Landmarc at the Time Warner center, it’s hip, trendy, but not over the top, great wine menu with great prices and a pretty stunning view looking down on central park from Columbus Circle.

    by: NYC Insider Guide

Anrew is spot on – I LOVE Alta! Wrote about it in my diary, “Dinner at Alta, AMAZING Tapas in a converted brownstone (10th b/w 5th and 6th)” A very similar place, but Italian, is Crispo. Crispo (now closed – 14th and 8th Ave). Great Italian food and decor, hidden gem. Definitely try the Spagetti Carbonara, perfectly al dente with the egg on top. Landmarc is great, especially for brunch, and I always recommend the Boathouse in Central Park. One of my favorite places in the City.

We got on line at 11:30, which was the perfect time for the 12pm cruise. We were third on line, meaning we got to sit at the front of the boat, and about 40 more people lined up within 3 minutes right after us.

The tour was great and we got up close views of the financial district, Empire State Building, World Trade Center, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport and more, without ever leaving the water. The guides were lively, funny and kept all us adults and kids laughing the whole time, including some fierce and fast spins in the water.

The guides come around with a surprise for everyone (no..I won’t tell you what it is, but let’s just say, don’t bring anything that can’t get wet!) and they will also take pics with your own device with the Statue of Liberty as a back drop.
