The Garment District, also called the Fashion District or Fashion Center, is home to many of the world’s most famous fashion designers and showrooms. The area is an amazing resource for fabrics, beads and trims, however, don’t expect to walk in off the street to Donna Karan or Calvin Klein’s showroom or sample sales. The best way to possibly get access to private showrooms is through a private tour, otherwise, make sure to check NYC Sample Sales while you’re in town.

Many (many) years ago, this NYC area was called the Tenderloin and the Devil’s Arcade and was infamously known for it’s abundance of prostitution, bootlegging, betting and racketeering. Lucky for us, it’s all about fashion & accessories today!

    Garment District Things to Do

Fashion Walk of Fame (35th to 41st Streets, on 7th Ave) – 26 plaques (much like a Hollywood Star) honoring some of fashions’ great designers. Names include Norma Kamali, Betsey Johnson, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Halston and Donna Karan

Parsons School of Design (40th St/7th Ave, West side) – as seen on Project Runway and Tim Gunn, who was Chair of Fashion Design and a faculty member for many years. Parsons’ alumn include Anna Sui, Donna Karan, Jason Wu, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford. The school’s main campus is in Greenwich Village, but here is one of their smaller centers.

Garment District Kiosk (39th St & 7th Ave) – pick up some brochures, maps and coupons.

The Museum at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) (27th St @ 7th Ave) – Free to visit and they do a lovely job of providing entertaining and educational exhibits highlighting fashion as it relates to history, politics and culture. Closed Sunday, Monday and holidays.

Free Garment Tours by a Garment Center pro are offered on the Garment District site.

    Garment District Shopping Tours

The NYC Garment Center “Insider” Shopping Tour takes you on a behind-the-scenes shopping experience of the neighborhood where fashion was born. Shop Gotham escorts you to six appointment-only designer showrooms in the Fashion District.

    Garment District Restaurants

MacarOn Café (161 W 36th St) – Parisian and organic café, a local fashion designer favorite for lunch.

Angelina Bakery – local favorite for gelato, desserts, nutella donuts, pastries and baked goods.

Parker & Quin @ The Refinery Hotel – a solid all-around menu, covering every meal with smoothies, breakfast, steaks, sandwiches and everything in between.

Ben’s Kosher Deli – a local favorite for years and great for families. Expect a huge menu and even bigger portions of matzoh ball soup, pastrami, chopped liver and potato pancakes with applesauce.

Keens Steakhouse – old school NYC steak house, heavy menu with a heavy price tag, but meat lovers think it’s worth every dollar.

The Deco Food + Drink – fairly new food hall that “brings the best of the five boroughs” to the Garment District. Cuisines include Afghan, Mexican, Hawaiian, Chinese, Brazilian plus a bar spotlighting New York brews and spirits in a casual Art Deco-inspired setting.

The Garment District has millions of people working daily up in those skyscrapers, so you’ll see dozens of coffee shops, delis, diners and other casual lunch spots. They should almost all be good, since nothing lasts in NYC that isn’t, especially when it comes to the demanding commuter crowd.

SoHo Map Guide | Best Restaurants, Hotels, Stores, Shopping

    [ad_1]

Shopping, Stores, Art Galleries & Restaurants

SoHo (SOuth of HOuston – pronounced How-ston) is a NYC neighborhood filled with the best shopping and restaurants. Traditionally known as a haven for artists and their lofts, it has become more upscale over the years and a much sought-after place for New Yorkers to live.

    SoHo NYC Things to Do

New York Fire Museum (278 Spring & Watts St) – renovated 1904 firehouse, with fire-related artifacts: painted leather buckets, helmets, parade hats and belts, tools, hand pumped fire engines. Open Wed – Sunday.

Museum of Ice Cream – Insta-worthy photos await you at this spot with plenty of colorful interactive installations, including a giant rainbow sprinkle pool, a pink subway ride, and a three-story slide.

Color Factory – this museum has a ton of interactive exhibits, great online reviews from all ages, photo opps, and celebrates the many shades of the city – from the bright yellow of a taxi cab to the creamy brown of a street pretzel.

New York Earth Room (141 Wooster, Houston/Prince) – Free. Many NY-ers consider this a hidden gem. Called an “installation,” or exhibit, 140 tons of sculpted soil (22 inches deep) filling 3600 sq ft of a 2nd floor gallery. No photos allowed. It’s basically an apartment filled with dirt – and some people love it.

Broken Kilometer (393 W Broadway, same artist). Ask kids to guess how many brass rods they see lying on the floor. Hint: it’s composed of 500 highly polished, round, solid brass rods, each measuring two meters in length and five centimeters (two inches) in diameter.

Children’s Museum of the Arts (103 Charlton Street) – unites children and artists to create and share ambitious works of art with their communities and the world.

Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art (26 Wooster St) – the only dedicated LGBTQ+ art museum in the world with a mission to exhibit and preserve LGBTQ+ art and foster the artists who create it.

The NYU campus, Washington Square Park, gorgeous brownstones and cobble stone streets, amazing restaurants, tons of trees and much more make this area a local favorite. For purposes of dividing the neighborhoods, here we cover Greenwich Village and NoHo. These areas, which are tiny in size, are jam-packed with so much to do, so please see our separate guides for the West Village and East Village.

Things to Do and See in Greenwich Village NYC

NoHo NYC, which stands for NOrth of HOuston, has an abundance of nightlife, restaurants, and many shops offering one-of-a-kind designer goods. This is often where up-and-coming designers open their first clothing, jewelry and leather goods boutiques before they become super-famous.

Village Alliance – the local advocacy group offers an information booth and free tours. They are on top of every new business and restaurant and quite often offer local discounts to their member businesses.

The Village Alliance Information Booth is located at the Ruth Wittenberg Triangle on 6th Avenue, between West 9th St. & Greenwich Avenue. They also offer free walking tours. You can also discover Greenwich Village history and gossip that even New York’s cognoscenti don’t know with their seasonal Greenwich Village Free Walking Tours. Check their website for over 20 self guided tours throughout the village, focusing on different things, like music, celebrity, architecture, politics, kids and much more.

Washington Square Park is home to the Washington Square Arch, which was modeled after Paris’ Arc de Triomphe. The park is amazing place to walk around and there are quite often protests, events, art fairs, movies under stars and more going on.

    Washington Square Park NYC

Washington Mews is a small strip of residential land by NYU that will make you feel like you’re in a small European village. The New Yorkers who styled this whole area in the 1800s clearly had a thing for Europe and modeled everything after it.

    Greenwich Village NYC Restaurants

Pommes Frites – grab and go Belgian Fries, served in paper cones, with a choice of 30 sauces. Soooo good – easy, fast, cheap! 128 Macdougal St.

Blue Ribbon Brasserie (Sullivan b/w Spring and Prince) – excellent, high end comfort food. A local favorite of the City’s chefs after they close their own retaurants. Great for late-night dining. Must like the menu as-is and definitely make a reservation.

Tomoe Sushi (172 Thompson St) – long lines, but some of the best and reasonably priced sushi in NYC.

Minetta Tavern (West Village) – often lauded as the best burger in the city. But, it’s not a burger joint, more like a bistro. MT started as a speakeasy in the 1920s and over the years has seen all kinds of celebs, authors, fashion designers and other legends.

    NoHo Recommended Restaurants

Bond St Sushi (6 Bond St/Lafayette) – very swanky sushi spot. $50 and up for dinner. Crowd is well-dressed, both for business and dates.

La Esquina (114 Kenmare, Centre St) – on the outside, a dive Mexican taco stand, but inside (once you walk through the kitchen), one of the hottest and secret restaurants and nightlife in all of Manhattan.

Il Buco (53 Great Jones St) – authentic Italian and Mediterranean with communal tables. The type of place locals go 2x a week and for sure for Sunday dinner.

Top of Greenwich Village NYC Neighborhood Guide

Many tiny, original and unique boutiques line the streets on Mulberry, Mott and Elizabeth Streets. Don’t expect brand names (ie, chain stores), but original high-end designers, many of whom go on to become household brand names. Much cooler than fake, illegal bags on Canal Street.
