Marshals made its highly anticipated debut on CBS on March 1, 2026, and it dropped a major bomb in episode 1: the death of Monica Dutton. A spinoff of the original series, Yellowstone, Marshals follows former U.S. Navy SEAL and rancher Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and a specialized group of U.S. Marshals tasked with protecting the state of Montana. As fans catch up with the new show, some are wondering how Monica died.

Who Played Monica Dutton in Yellowstone?
Actress Kelsey Asbille played Monica Dutton from 2018 to 2024. Monica and Kayce’s love story became a central plot in Yellowstone as they raised their son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), together.
Kelsey reflected on her character’s journey as a mother during a previous interview with Wide Open Country.
“Seeing [Tate] grow up — and Brecken too, because I can’t believe how grown up he is now — I think especially in the opening of the season … seeing the Dutton in [Tate] is really terrifying for Monica,” the actress explained in November 2021 “Trying to help him deal with this with the trauma in the aftermath really pushes her to a tipping point. Tate is what she’s been fighting for this whole time, and so she’s got to do what she can for her son.”
How Did Monica Die in Yellowstone?
In the season 1 premiere of Marshals, Monica’s fate at the end of Yellowstone is revealed: she died from cancer due to toxic contamination from the reservation. As fans recall, she also got a traumatic brain injury in the first season of the original Paramount Network series.
In Marshals, Kayce tells Tate that his mother “suffered” and even adds, “The only thing more cruel than losing a parent, is losing the wrong one.”
Why Isn’t Kelsey Asbille in Marshals?
Kelsey hasn’t discussed her character’s demise before Marshals, but Luke explained the decision to kill off Monica during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, chalking it up to Kayce’s motivation and journey with the U.S. Marshals.
“Obviously, we can’t just watch this guy have his dream life. There’s no drama,” Luke said in March 2026. “Something’s gonna have to happen that gets in the way of him having that. Otherwise, why is he gonna take a badge? The last time we saw him, he was throwing a badge in a field. Is he gonna go pick it up?”
For her part, Kelsey is busy with other projects. She starred in the 2024 film Don’t Move. After ending Yellowstone, she booked her next feature film roles in Adulting and The Technique, per Deadline.
