    A region of space devoid of matter in our galaxy reveals the Universe beyond, where every point visible here is a distant galaxy. The cluster/void structure can be seen very clearly, demonstrating that our Universe is not of exactly uniform density on all scales. While there are many galaxy-rich regions, galaxy-poor or even galaxy-free regions are also abundant, like holes within a cosmic Swiss cheese.     In all directions, at great distances, the Universe looks younger, more uniform, and less evolved. Does that mean Earth must be the center?

    There are some remarkable and surprising facts about the Universe, but three of them, put together, force us into a profound set of restrictions on existence itself.

    1. The Universe, on the largest scales, appears to be isotropic, or the same in all directions. No matter how far away we look, no direction appears to be “preferred” or to exhibit different properties than any other.
    2. Also, on the largest cosmic scales, the Universe appears to be homogeneous, or the same at all locations. Whether we look “here” or “there” or “anywhere else,” we see roughly the same temperatures, densities, numbers of galaxies, etc., so long as we sample a large enough region of space.
    3. And finally, the farther away we look in terms of distance — again, equally in all directions — the farther back we are seeing in time: seeing the Universe as it was at earlier and earlier moments.

    Those three facts, of isotropy, homogeneity, and evolution in time, are some of the hallmarks of modern cosmology: both theoretically and observationally. But what does that mean…

    SpongeBob fans rejoice! Wendy’s is diving into Bikini Bottom flavors with the beloved Krabby Patty—a culinary treat you won’t want to miss.

    The fast-food chain announced Wednesday, in partnership with Paramount to celebrate the 25th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants, that it plans to launch a new cheeseburger called the “Krabby Patty Kollab.” And in true SpongeBob fashion, it’ll come with a “top-secret” sauce. Also launching as part of the collaboration is a vanilla Frosty featuring a pineapple mango-flavored puree swirl, aptly named the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty.

    “In a world where corners are often cut, Wendy’s stands out for its commitment to quality in everything we do—from our fresh, famous food to collaborations with beloved brands,” said Lindsay Radkoski, U.S. Chief Marketing Officer for The Wendy’s Company, in a press release. “It’s only fitting that two of the most iconic squares in pop culture are joining forces to create this unique, limited-time experience for fans of all ages!”

    What’s in the Krabby Patty Kollab?

    The “Kollab” features two exciting menu items that will be available at Wendy’s restaurants nationwide for a limited time:

    • Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty: A vanilla Frosty swirled with a pineapple mango-flavored puree.
    • Krabby Patty Kollab Burger: Wendy’s version of the iconic cartoon burger features a quarter pound of beef, two slices of melty American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, and a “top-secret Krabby Kollab sauce” all on a toasted bun.

    A Wendy’s spokesperson told USA TODAY, “Our top-secret Krabby Kollab sauce is a closely guarded recipe that makes the first bite of the Krabby Patty Kollab Burger worth the wait for SpongeBob SquarePants fans and Wendy’s customers alike.”

    The news release also emphasized, “The Krabby Patty Kollab program will bring food items inspired by the iconic Krabby Patty from SpongeBob SquarePants into the real world and onto menus for the first time ever.”

    When Will the “Kollab” Be Available?

    Both menu items will be available nationwide in the U.S., Canada, and Guam starting Tuesday, October 8, according to a Wendy’s news release.

    However, customers in Los Angeles will have the chance to get an exclusive first taste of the Krabby Patty Kollab Meal on Monday, October 7, and Tuesday, October 8, through an “immersive Wendy’s drive-thru experience” in Panorama City.

    There’s a meme showing a guy in utter collapse as he realizes that 24 years ago isn’t the 1970s but the year 2000! I’m similarly gob-smacked about how rapidly time has sped by as I settle to watch the premiere of season 24 of the venerated Law and Order.

    The show opens with District Attorney Nicholas Baxter being interviewed. This interview serves a couple of purposes. You may recall that Baxter’s election was too close to call in the previous season’s finale. So, the first thing this interview does is bring the audience up to date. Baxter won! He is the newly elected Democratic Manhattan DA, and is now being interviewed in an attempt, in my opinion, to seduce the media. It’s hard to imagine his predecessor, Jack McCoy, doing this. But we know Baxter is a horse of a different color. He’s much more a political animal than McCoy and even his second in command, Executive District Attorney Nolan Price. McCoy and Price are legal purists and politics-be-dammed type prosecutors. Baxter establishes that his office will not be hyper-partisan. To prove it, he dabbles in ‘bothsidesism,’ stating that both political parties are weakening institutions like the courts. Therefore, the second purpose of the interview is to further differentiate Baxter from McCoy. I’ll be paying close attention to how Baxter’s mindset plays out throughout the season. 

    As always, in Dick Wolf’s storytelling formula, a crime is committed. It’s a domestic violence case that I personally found hard to watch. I was recently appointed to the Board of a sexual assault agency and know all too well the non-fictional brutality of this kind of violence. The episode centered on a female Brooklyn District Attorney, Macy Harper, and her rich fiancé. The biographies of these victims elevate the case to a higher profile. 

    The crime facilitates the entrance of the 27th Precinct Homicide Division’s new lieutenant, Lt. Jessica Brady. Brady made an impressive, unapologetically intelligent entrance. The women in Dick Wolf’s pantheon of police officers are always badass. For example, back in the day on Law and Order, S. Epatha Merkessen played Lt. Van Buren, as pragmatic and wise. Presently on Organized Crime, Danielle Mone Truitt, plays Detective Stabler’s boss, Ayanna Bell, as a ride-or-die, protector of her team. Of course, on SVU, Mariska Hargitay imbues Captain Olivia Benson with empathy as her superpower. But, back to my point. Maura Tierney’s portrayal of Lt. Brady, stand out in a Sherlock Holmes way. For instance, when she has the conspiracy theorist suspect in the interrogation box, she quickly susses out that he isn’t the killer. She says this to Detectives Shaw and Riley, who are skeptical. A moment later, CCTV confirms that the perp was on the train at the time of the crime.

    To nip any conflict and tension in the bud, Brady calls out Riley. She senses his mistrust. She makes him aware that she is aware of his close relationship with the departed Lt. Kate Dixon. Recall that Dixon recruited Riley following his six-month suspension. Brady let Riley know that she’s alert to his potential credibility issues and is concerned about any kind of stink rubbing off on her, especially since she is new to the job and the case is high-profile. Call me crazy, but the ‘fire’ between those two got me feeling…

    Eventually, Riley and Shaw, arrest the rich, jerk fiancé, Dylan Phipps. I say ‘jerk’ because it’s not accidental that the boyfriend is conveniently out to dinner with a right-wing publisher, Kenneth Lane, who, when questioned, suspiciously mentions a case the victim was working that dealt with a sex trafficking rapper. In my head, this is ‘a black guy did it,” red herring. Later, it was confirmed that the fiancé, Phipps, and the publisher, Lane, were in cahoots. The publisher had suppressed not one, not two, but seven stories of the fiancé attacking the victim. One was a Diddy-Cassie style video. The publisher was paid $100,000 per story, David Pecker-Donald Trump, catch and kill style. I object! Twenty-four seasons and Law and Order has never felt more contemporary, more relevant. Too me, Catch and Kill is too damned relevant!

    Rather than face a trial, the fiancé hangs himself. Baxter and Price conclude that justice has been served, but not for Assistant District Attorney Sam Maroun. Frequently finding it challenging to control her emotions, Maroun is highly pissed! So much so that Price must explain to Baxter why she’s so upset. It’s here we learn that Mauron’s sister died as a result of domestic violence. She gets a visit from the victim’s sister, who is enraged by the absence of justice. Maroun appeals to her bosses to go after the publisher, Lane as an accomplice. To their credit, they grant her the chance to link Lane to the crime scene. Price and Maroun find a driver who places Lane at the scene and hears him utter,” I’m going to kill that bitch.” Maroun gets excited, she feels like justice is coming. But, as the title (Catch and Kill) suggests, when Price and Maroun return to reinterview the driver, he’s been caught (lawyered up) and killed (paid to keep silent about what he saw and heard). Without the testimony of the driver, the DA has no case. Baxter drops the charges.

    Maroun snaps and is ready to burn her career down. She’s in free fall, triggered by the lack of justice for the victim, Macy Harper, whom she knew; for her sister, whom she cherished; and for the thousands of nameless, faceless victims she will never know. Price catches her figuratively and literally as the episode ends with Maroun crying in Prices’ arms. Call me crazy, but the ‘fire’ between those two got me feeling…Just kidding!

    It was a great premiere chock full of up-to-the-minute news. If you love Law and Order like I do, share your thoughts about the main character’s relationships. Will Baxter and Price clash over politics? Will Riley and his new Lt. Brady get along? Is Maroun stable enough to do her job to Baxter’s satisfaction?

    How to Make the Ghostly Pumpkin Spice Mousse Cups

     

    Make the Pumpkin Spice Mousse

    To make the pumpkin spice mousse, start by whipping cream cheese, pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, vanilla extract, and the sweetener of your choice. Prepared whipped cream is then folded in to lighten up the texture.

    Tips for a Super Smooth Mousse: Make sure your cream cheese is softened before whipping with the pumpkin puree for a silky smooth mousse. If it’s not softened enough and you find yourself with little white specs of cream cheese, pop the bowl in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds to soften and then whip until smooth.

    This pumpkin mousse is also super delicious as a standalone dessert, even dare we say without the ghosts.

    Assembling the Dessert Cups

     

    Chocolate Cake (bottom layer)

    Add your favorite premade chocolate cake to the bottom of your jar or dessert dish. You can use your dessert dish to punch out the perfect sizes and then slice horizontally through the middle to make the cake about 1/2 thick. You can also just lay the bottom with cake crumbles. Your favorite chocolate cookies will work here too.

    Pumpkin spice mousse + garnish (middle layer)

    Spoon your mousse over the top of the cake. We like a 2:1 ratio of mousse to the cake. Then garnish with cake crumbs and chopped pecans, which add another layer of flavor and a lovely crunchy element to this dessert.

    The whipped cream ghosts! (top layer)

    Place your whipped cream in a piping bag fitted with a large round piping tip ( We used Wilton 1A Large Round Piping Tip). If you don’t have one, simply place the whipped cream in a plastic bag and make about a ½” wide cut-off across the corner.

    Pipe the whipped cream over the top of the pumpkin mousse in a tall swirl.

    How To Make The Ghost Faces

    • For the ghost eyes: We used candy googly eyes.
    • For the ghost mouths: We rolled moistened cake crumbs into oval shapes and flattened them.
    • You can substitute the eyes and mouth with mini chocolate chips instead.

     💡 Tip: Practice piping your ghosts a couple of times on a piece of waxed paper to get them just right.

    Prep Time 20 minutes

    Chill Time 2 hours

    Ingredients 

    • 1 15 oz. can pumpkin puree
    • 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
    • 2 cups heavy cream or heavy whipping cream
    • 2 1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
    • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    • 1/4 cup powdered sweetener of choice, for sugar-free used stevia, erythritol, monk fruit and adjust to taste)
    • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup toasted pecan halves
    • candy Googly Eyes
    • leftover or premade chocolate cake

    DIRECTIONS 

    • The whipped cream: Place your beaters and bowl in the freezer for 5 minutes to chill. Then add heavy cream to the bowl, with 1 tsp vanilla and powdered sweetener of choice. Beat on high until thick. Chill until ready to use.

    • The pumpkin mousse: Whip cream cheese, pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, vanilla extract, and 1/8 cup of sweetener of choice to taste until smooth. Gently fold in 1/2 cup of the whipped cream. Set in fridge for 2 hours to chill and set.

    • Assemble: Add cake or cookie crumbles of choice to the bottom of a small parfait dish or jar. Then add pumpkin mousse and top with cake crumbs and pecan pieces. Put whipped cream in a piping bag with a wide round tip and pipe on top in the shape of a ghost. Add googly eyes and for the mouth, roll moistened leftover cake crumbs into a small oval shape and flatten. Enjoy!

    • Tips: No googly eyes? Use chocolate chips instead. Or roll leftover cake crumbs into small balls.

    OKRs aren’t just for tech companies.

     “As a small business, you can’t afford to be distracted,” says Christina Wodtke, Stanford lecturer and author of Radical Focus. “OKRs provide a focus on the single most important thing that you should be doing right now.”

    Here’s how you can leverage company objectives and measurable key results using a simple OKR template.

    What is an OKR?

    OKR stands for “objectives and key results.” It’s a goal-setting method for reaching qualitative business objectives by achieving quantitative key results. For example, you might have the objective “Get customers excited about our rebrand.” Your key results could then include improvements in metrics like click-through rate on new ads, increased share of voice on social media, and website traffic.

    “The objective’s job is to get people jumping out of bed in the morning with excitement,” Christina writes in a blog post. “Key results take all that inspirational language and quantify it.”

    History of OKRs

    The history of the OKR methodology begins in the 1950s, with Peter F. Drucker, an Austrian professor of management at NYU. Peter wrote The Practice of Management (1954), “a guide for men in major management positions,” based on his experience consulting at General Motors. In his book, he introduced the concept of management by objectives (MBO), which he described as a practice for “converting objective needs into personal goals.” This would form the foundation of the OKR approach.

    In 1983, then president of Intel Andrew Grove adapted the MBO philosophy for the Information Age in his book High Output Management, adding the concept of key results. “A manager’s objectives are supported by an appropriate set of key results,” Andrew writes in High Output Management. “His objectives are in turn tied to his supervisor’s objectives so that if the manager meets his objectives, the supervisor will meet his.”

    In the late ’90s, John Doerr—venture capitalist, former Intel salesperson, and “Johnny Appleseed of OKRs”—introduced the concept of objectives and key results to Google, and from there it became increasingly popular in the tech world. In 2018, John published the book Measure What Matters. Inspired by what he learned from Grove at Intel, John further defined the OKR methodology. 

    How to write OKRs

    1. Start with a compelling objective
    2. Break it into quantifiable results
    3. Set up tracking

    Writing OKRs isn’t complicated. Here’s how to do it:

    1. Start with a compelling objective

    Your objective is a one-sentence description of a time-bound goal. “Any business enterprise must build a true team and weld individual efforts into a common effort,” Peter F. Drucker wrote in The Practice of Management. “Business performance therefore requires that each job be directed towards the objectives of the whole business.”

    A good objective will impact the entire organization but is actionable by just one team or individual. If you can’t achieve your desired outcome because you’re waiting for someone else to do something, you didn’t choose a good objective—choose something that’s within your control.

    2. Break it into quantifiable results

    A good objective is motivational, but not necessarily quantitative. The purpose of key results is to break down that objective into a handful of measurable outcomes (typically three, but you can use more or less depending on your needs).

    “Your objective is supposed to be inspiring,” Christina says, “but the key results are what really define it.” On her blog, Christina recommends brainstorming OKRs by asking, “How would we know if we met our objective?”

    This is where key results can start to look a lot like key performance indicators, or KPIs, because they use similar metrics, like revenue, average order value (AOV), customer lifetime value (CLV), and Net Promoter Score (NPS). The difference is that key results are paired with a qualitative objective.

    3. Set up tracking

    You’ve defined your objective and listed a few key results. Now what?

    Christina recommends a twice-weekly cadence of check-ins she calls Monday commitments and Friday wins. Basically, every Monday, you check your team’s progress against OKRs and commit to tasks you will accomplish throughout the week. On Friday, you celebrate what your team was able to accomplish that week.

    Shopify’s OKR tracking template can help you track progress toward team objectives visually. A team OKR template can be a great resource for checking progress between meetings or presenting to the whole team.

    You don’t necessarily need to follow the Monday commitments and Friday wins framework, but you should establish a way to track OKR progress and celebrate wins, especially if you’ve set ambitious goals. If you’re a solopreneur, an accountability partner can help hold you to your objectives.

    “I started an accountability group with three other female entrepreneurs and we all send each other our weekly OKRs,” Christina says. “If you’re a company of one, going alone is just really hard. I think finding other people who are going on the journey with you is really critical to your mental health and your ability to stay with the project.”

    An example of an effective OKR

    According to Christina, a hypothetical US-based ecommerce store that wants to expand into Europe might use the following OKRs:

    Objective: Germany is delighted by our product offering.

    Key result: Sales of $500,000 in beta offering.

    Key result: 25% of sales are repeat customers.

    Key result: Returns are < 8%.

    Here’s why it works:
