    As is inevitable in any losing presidential effort, a lot of the fingers being pointed at Democratic culprits are aimed at the Harris-Walz campaign, with a big negative assist from the former Biden-Harris campaign that was terminated in July. Some critics think Kamala Harris failed sufficiently to “pivot to the center” when the Trump campaign was pounding her as “radical communist;” others believe she erred by failing to go hard-core lefty populist. Still others seem to be certain she should have junked her billion-dollar ad blitz and instead appeared on a few dozen podcasts.

    The reality is that while the Harris-Walz campaign was national in scope, its efforts (as were those of the Trump-Vance campaign) were concentrated to an extraordinary degree on the seven universally recognized battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that decided the election. So if her campaign had any positive net impact, you should be able to see it there. And as the Washington Post’s Philip Bump calculated a couple of days after Trump was declared the winner, you actually can see it if you compared these states to the country as a whole:

    The Post’s model estimates that, when all of the votes are counted, only one state, Colorado, will have seen its vote margin shift to the left. Every other state and D.C. will have shifted to the right.

    The last time an election saw that uniform a shift was in 1992, when all but one state shifted to the left as Bill Clinton was elected president…..

    On average, states are likely to end up having shifted about 4.6 points to the right since 2020….

    [T]he states where the shift toward Trump was the smallest included many of those that were the closest in 2020 — that is, the swing states. States that had a margin of 3 points or less in 2020 moved to the right by 3.4 points on average. States where the margin in 2020 was larger than that moved to the right by an average of 4.8 points.

    There are three significant implications of these patterns. First, the shift to Trump was indeed a national wave, albeit a limited one in most states (big exceptions being Florida, Texas and New York, where Trump’s gains were super-sized). Second, the Harris campaign appears to have mitigated the swing to Trump precisely where it (and she) had the most intense activity. To the extent the campaign mattered, it was a net positive.

    The third implication, which is more implicit than explicit in the numbers, is that the Democratic ticket was battling a national political climate that was fundamentally adverse, making the campaign a painful uphill slog that was disguised by slightly askew polling and the famous Harris “vibes.” As Cook Political Report editor-in-chief Amy Walter told my colleague Benjamin Hart in a post-election interview, for all the initial excitement Harris began her late-starting campaign at a significant disadvantage:

    Fundamentally, it does come back to Biden and the administration. He’s an unpopular president, and an unpopular president doesn’t win reelection. The only thing possibly preventing the unpopular president from losing is that he’s challenged by a more unpopular candidate. Where Trump fits into this is that, yes, he’s still unpopular. But — and we noted this before Biden dropped out and then it started happening again in October — in retrospect, people think of Trump’s presidency more favorably than they did even when he was president. They may have not liked Trump and what he stands for or what he does, but as they put it in context now, thinking, Well, compared to what we have now, was it better or worse? — they say, “Well, at least stuff was less expensive.”

    And the only way you counter that is if you have a candidate on the Democratic side who’s not part of the incumbent party. 

    Harris worked hard to depict herself as a “change” candidate, but that was always going to be a tough sell. With a little luck, she might have been able to squeak by in the Electoral College (she lost the three “Blue Wall” states by less than two percentage points) even while losing the national popular vote, just as Trump did in 2016. But nobody should blame her for failing to overcome the dead weight of an administration too many voters considered a disappointment if not a failure.

    Fritz put the world No 1 through his paces in the early stages of a fabulous contest at the Inalpi Arena in Turin.

    The 23-year-old, however, raised his game when required to register a big win to improve to 23-1 in his last five tournaments.

    Sinner hit this superb backhand winner from way downtown against Fritz

    Fritz went toe-to-toe with Sinner throughout a contest ultimately decided by slender margins with one break of serve in each set.

    Sinner made the decisive break in the opening set when Fritz served at 4-5, bringing up a set point with a disguised drop shot and then converting at the first opportunity.

    Fritz refused to go away in the second set but cracked under pressure as he served to stay in the match.

    Speaking to Laura Robson, Sinner says his win was ‘crucial’

    “It was a very tough match, we got to know each other very well in a Grand Slam final,” said Sinner. “We knew exactly what to expect today, he was very aggressive and I was prepared.

    “I just tried to serve very well in the important moments, which I did. That was a very crucial game in the second set, I was down 0-30. If he breaks me there, the momentum could change.”

    Sinner will seek to extend his perfect 2-0 record in the Ilie Nastase Group when he takes on fourth seed Daniil Medvedev on Thursday.

    Fritz, who is 1-1, aims to secure a crucial win against Alex de Minaur in his bid to advance to the semi-finals.

    Henman: It’s another impressive win for Sinner

    “Taylor Fritz’s tennis was very, very impressive. There were 20 games and in 18 of them it was so, so tight,” Tim Henman told Sky Sports Tennis.

    “If anything there were times when Fritz had the upper hand but he was never able to create the full chance from the half-chance and when Sinner got his opportunity at the end of each set he was able to take it.

    “The scoreboard pressure of serving first in each set gave Sinner that advantage. It’s another impressive win for Sinner. He is showing us why he’s the best in the world right now.”

    Highlights of Daniil Medvedev against Alex de Minaur from the ATP Finals

    Medvedev claimed a dominant 6-2 6-4 victory over De Minaur on Tuesday to move back into contention.

    Medvedev came into the fixture after a dramatic loss against Taylor Fritz on Sunday where he lost his temper, smashed his racket, and earned a penalty point for smashing a courtside microphone, but the fourth seed looked considerably calm during his straight-sets win over De Minaur.

    Medvedev only made 10 unforced errors and conceded just nine points on his serve as he wrapped up his victory in an hour and 18 minutes to extend his record to 7-3 over De Minaur.

    “After the last match, I was too tired to fight mentally the way I do and so during the match when it doesn’t work your way, you want to win and when you start losing you get frustrated,” said Medvedev after his win.

    “So I went into this match thinking, if I lose I go home on Thursday for sure and if I win then I have the chance to have a good feeling.

    “I tried to hit some shots and it worked well and I’m okay with it.

    “I went into this match trying to block the noise even from myself so no tantrums and I really didn’t care what was happening on the court.”

    “Medvedev was a totally different player, no reaction, no fist bumps, just a solid mentality start to finish,” said Sky Sports’ Laura Robson.

    “He was watching his own highlights and his stats and was in totally different mood and had more firepower to his game.

    “His backhand was catching De Minaur off guard and his serve was better.

    “Medvedev was talking about matches becoming a bit monotonous whereby you play guys who all move well, who all hit the ball well and play the same point over and over.

    “He said it feels mentally draining because of how each point is played.

    “Maybe that’s because of the serve because it’s gone up and down this year and the way the ball toss is moving a bit forward.”

    (Bloomberg) — A breakneck rally in stocks ran out of steam, with Treasury yields soaring and the dollar hitting the highest level in two years ahead of a key inflation report.

    Equities edged lower after the S&P 500’s biggest five-day run in a year. Following sizable post-election gains, small caps and banks lost ground. Tesla Inc. dropped after an almost 45% surge. Bitcoin approached $90,000 as traders bet on a boom under President-elect Donald Trump. The dollar rose to its highest since November 2022. Treasury yields climbed, with data expected to show the uneven path of easing price pressures in the home stretch toward the Federal Reserve’s target.

    Fed Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari said he’ll be looking at incoming inflation data to determine whether another rate cut is appropriate in December. To Will Compernolle at FHN Financial, a hot consumer price index and/or strong retail spending could push yields higher if a December rate cut “starts looking imprudent.”

    The post-election advance in US stocks could stall as investors start to take profits, according to strategists at Citigroup Inc. led by Chris Montagu. Investor exposure to American shares jumped to the highest since 2013 after the presidential vote amid optimism around stronger economic growth, according to a survey from Bank of America Corp.

    “We are on watch for potential profit taking, consolidation, or even correction for US equities heading into the first quarter of the new year,” said Dan Wantrobski at Janney Montgomery Scott. “Upward momentum remains strong and investor sentiment favorable, but stocks are once again overbought/extended across multiple timeframes.”

    The S&P 500 fell 0.3%. The Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.9%. The Russell 2000 slipped 1.8%.

    Treasury 10-year yields advanced 12 basis points to 4.43%. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.4%.

    The core consumer price index due on Wednesday, which excludes food and energy, likely rose at the same pace on both a monthly and annual basis compared to September’s readings. The overall CPI probably increased 0.2% for a fourth month, while the year-over-year measure is projected to have accelerated for the first time since March.

    A survey conducted by 22V Research shows 55% of investors expect the market reaction to CPI to be “mixed/negligible”, 31% said “risk-off” and only 14%, “risk-on.”
