Black History and the California Gold Rush


Negro Bar and Negro Hill were very successful mining towns in the early days of the California Gold Rush. Michael Harris talks about the historical significance of Pan Africans in early California history and the controversy over whether or not to preserve these authentic contributions which helped shape California and our nation. People of African descent were in California before the 1848 gold discovery, and helped shape the path to statehood. Without including black history, the story of the California gold rush is incomplete.
