The in-depth story. It’s October 17th, 1989, the day the Cypress Street Viaduct collapsed. The Loma Prieta earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 struck the Bay Area and caused a large section of the Nimitz Freeway’s upper deck to fall onto its lower deck. 42 people lost their lives on that fateful day.
